Connoquenessing Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Evans City and Connoquenessing, PA
The Bridge on Old Route 68 is where I usually put in, but you could put in at the bridge at Ashstop Road. The old Route 68 bridge is being replaced so you may have to put in below the bridge. There's a stretch of creek about two miles long before you come to another bridge. On a very short trip you can get out there and walk the road back to your put in spot. This is just a short ride that usually yields geese, ducks, carp, turtles and deer. You can continue down the creek another mile or so and you will pass a protected Blue Heron nesting area. I think that means just no hunting. I've never had a problem there. About a mile further down the Connoquenessing you will come upon the 528 bridge. This is another nice place to pull out of the creek. Go another mile and you will pass some cottages and come upon yet another bridge. If the creek is up from spring thaw you can go all the way to Zelienople Pa. This would be a nice 1-day trip of easy paddling and relaxing with the creatures. The creek is polluted but is being cleaned up slowly. Take a bag and join in on the clean up. I always do.
There really are no places to camp unless you ask permission along the way. I would pack a lunch and beverage and just make it a short one-day trip. It's a great place for that early spring paddle.
If you get off Route 79 at the Zelienople Exit in Butler County and then proceed to Route 68 to Evans City, you're almost there. The exits on this portion of 79 are a bit screwy, but if you have a driving map, you'll have no problem. Go through Evans City toward Butler (about 2 miles) Turn left on Old Route 68 and go about 2.5 miles. You will go down a fairly steep hill that still has some old brick showing through.
