Cohocton River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: May 2005
Nearest City: Cohocton, NY, USA
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
Submitted by: Jill Miller

Description:

We had quite a large party, 2 canoes and 3 kayaks, a total of 8 people. We put in the river in the town of Cohocton at the bridge right after Wilcox St. That section was the worst, some rough water and lots of garbage. We were very disappointed. Along the entire length of the river there were a lot of downed trees that collected branches and garbage. This made a lot of areas that were difficult to get through.

We paddled all the way to Bath, lots of rough water. A number of people in our party tipped over numerous times. You'd go over a patch of fast running water and smack into a mess of debris and trees in the water and then tip over. Along the way there was a lot of trash in the river, much of it seemed to be from roadwork crews-orange barrels, signs, orange cones. Unfortunately we were all too busy trying to stay upright to really enjoy the scenery. We would like to attempt the trip again someday though.

Comments:

I would recommend only experienced paddlers attempt this river.

Directions:

The town of Cohocton is located right off of exit 2 on Interstate 390. The town of Bath, where we took out, is off of exit 38 on Interstate 86 (old route 17).
