Lake Vesuvius - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Ironton, OH, USA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Bonneville

At the southern edge of Wayne National Forest (Ohio's only national forest), Lake Vesuvius is a 143-acre gem of rock formations and dense woods. Horsepower is restricted, so you don't have to worry about being run down. There's convenient parking next to the ramp for leisurely loading and unloading. Sandy coves and rock slabs make it easy to find nice places to rest or picnic. Vesuvius Furnace is near the ramp, for a piece of history. This was in the heart of Ohio's iron industry in the 1800s. A very pleasant and scenic place to paddle.

Convenient launch ramp and parking. Pit toilets at ramp.

From Ironton, go north for six miles on Route 93.
