Brushy Creek State Recreation Area
Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Fort Dodge, IA
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Ben Petty

Description:

Brushy Creek now has a ~600 acre lake built in 1998 by damming Brushy Creek. The area is very beautiful, with extremely clear water, many little bays to explore, and lots of flooded timber to make things interesting. There is talk about making this a destination park, due to the natural beauty of the area and the large trail system. The park totals over 6,000 acres. This has become my new favorite flatwater paddling destination. A no-wake law also means you don't have to worry about noise pollution from ski boats and jet-skis. If you only have a day to explore, I recommend the north end, with several secluded little bays and lots of flooded timber in the area. Wildlife is abundant, and if you're a fisherman- it's really picking up now as well.

Directions:

About 10 miles southeast of Fort Dodge, IA. Just follow the sign to Brushy Creek (from highway 20).
