Kayaking Penobscot Bay
A relaxing summer kayaking trip to Maine in 2009 aboard the mothership Wanderbird.
Kevin Hoeksema, Paddling.net employee, and his wife Teresa, met up with nine other paddlers in Belfast, Maine in August 2009. We were led by Karen Francoeur, Master Maine Sea Kayak Guide and Owner of Castine Kayak Adventures, and hosted by Capt. Rick and Capt. Karen Miles, along with the rest of the wonderful crew on board the converted fishing trawler, Wanderbird.
We boarded the Wanderbird and motored out for four full days of sight-seeing, kayaking and adventure around various islands in the Penobscot Bay. We toured the waters south and east of Belfast, exploring some of the outer islands of the Bay: Holbrook Island, Swans Island, Vinalhaven Islands and Butter Island. Those were just a few of the unique and beautiful areas where we paddled. Each day we would anchor in a different area, kayak every afternoon, then rest and relax comfortably on the ship every night. We enjoyed great food, great people and the wilderness scenery and wildlife that has made Maine famous!
