Kayaking the Florida Everglades
What better way to start off 2007 than kayaking in the beautiful, sunny Everglades! White sand beaches, tons of birds, good friends, and some great kayaking made this a special trip.
Brent Vredevoogd, co-founder of Paddling.net, along with his wife Chris and her sister Laurie, travelled from Michigan to Florida with Kevin Hoeksema (Paddling.net employee), and his wife Teresa. There they met up with Ari, a kayaker from Luxembourg, and our expert guide (and chef extraordinaire) from Crystal Seas Kayaking, Joel Beckwith.
Departing New Years Day from Everglades City, FL our group of 7 drove a short distance south to Chokoloskee and put the boats on the water. We spent the following four days paddling and exploring some of the islands and waterways in the vast 1.5 million acres of watery wilderness know as the Everglades National Park, camping each night in tents on designated areas of white sandy beaches. We camped two nights at Pavilion Key and one night at Mormon Key.
