Guidelines - Canoeing Myths by Cliff Jacobson
There are many ridiculous canoeing tips that are copied, edition after edition, in canoeing literature. For example, pushing off shore with the grip of your paddle. Cliff Jacobson lays out some examples of these "myths", many of which still survive today in modern books.

New Product Announcement
Spitfire by Emotion Kayaks
The Spitfire is the ultimate beach toy and day tripping boat for everyone from beginners to experts and kids to grandparents. It tracks well enough to not boss around the paddler with veering or waffling - but it is maneuverable enough to hold it's own in ocean surf. It's fast enough to excite, but it's super stable and calm and provides a comfortable ride for anybody.

Guidelines - Dry It, You'll Like It
Kevin Callan belives that drying your own food is by far the best way to prepare camp meals. He routinely spends the winter months buying up different veggies on sale and then drying them in bulk for use later on. Read his latest article for some tips on dehydrating food and a simple delicious recipe using some of these dried food items.

In The Same Boat
Marmite? It's a savory sandwich spread that originated in the very country that gave the world the sandwich. It's not exactly a household name on this side of the Pond, however, and even in Britain it's not universally beloved. Does Marmite have any place in the paddler's backcountry pantry? Tamia wanted to know. So she took the plunge. And her conclusion? "It's a Love-Hate Thing" — and it's this week's offering from In the Same Boat. That's alimentary, right?

Outfitter Photo Brazil Kayak Adventure
by Paraty Explorer
With deserted sandy beaches, tropical islands, Rainforest covered hills and traditional Caiçara fishing villages, Brazil's Costa Verde - just south of Rio de Janeiro - has all the ingredients for an amazing sea kayaking experience! We spend 5 days kayaking the warm waters of Brazil's only tropical fjord, paddling across naturally protected bays, through mangrove forests with stops at islands and beaches before finishing up in the picturesque colonial town of Paraty. Highlights of this lodge-based trip include the best beaches on Brazil's Green Coast; Brazil's only tropical fjord with outstanding views from the 500m Sugarloaf Peak; paddling through mangrove teeming with wildlife; and island hopping in the Bay of Paraty, with a chance of spotting the endangered Golden Lion Tamarin monkey.

Product Review Spotlight
Encounter by Wenonah Canoe
I love this boat for it's purpose. No, the Encounter is not my choice for a day tripper, unless the day trip may include packing out a field dressed white tail deer. It is faster than a solo-plus, and easier to load than a voyager. This is a LARGE solo and in my experience needs to be stern loaded for best performance... This boat also does well for weekend lake camping trips. I can't think of another solo boat that handles a 70qt cooler, 4 man tent, fishing tackle, and a folding lounge chair across a large windy lake with the ease and grace of my Encounter... Rating: 9 of 10 by Dave

What Do You Think?
Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Quietwater Symposium and at Canoecopia this year. Both were great shows and the growing anticipation for the paddling season was exciting. Don't forget, the first day of Spring is Saturday, March 20! As always, if you have any questions or comments, drop us a line at feedback@paddling.net.
