  Misissippi River Headwaters Conditions
Posted by: sx633 on May-06-13 9:57 PM (EST)

I'm planning a trip in a week from Lake Itasca to Cass Lake and beyond. Does anyone know the current conditions? Last I checked the Minnesota DNR site, there was no update on last summer's storms with respect to downfall, closed campgrounds, etc. Are river levels low in this region right now?

call the MN State Parks, and ask them about current conditions at Itasca - supposed to be a warming trend, which may help - see the webcam below

in northern MN last weekend. Lakes were still iced over (north of Duluth)but rivers were running at good levels. Will be in the 70's all week, so northern lakes should be iced out by next weekend. There's still a 2' snow pack by the BWCA which should keep the river levels up when it melts this week. Most the storm / fire damage last year was in the Superior national forest. I think the Itasca area was spared. But I would call the MN DNR for that area for current conditions before you leave. Have fun !
