better to go downriver than up, but not too much current in most places except the rapids - all but one of those have portages around

This is a great area, I've been there several times.

What time of year is your trip? (I mean what month).

Check out Bwca.com message boards. Lots of folks have plenty of advice/experiences. Beymer profiles this fairly well in his Quetico Provincial Park guide if you're interested in some night table reading.
