I'm feeling the need to head south to warmer waters and thought perhaps I'd go see some whooping cranes in Texas. I can probably get time for a day at Aransas refuge and 3ish days of paddling in mid-February.
I know absolutely nothing about coastal Texas- weather, currents, winds, shipping issues, but I ordered a book and I see there are some day-loop paddling trails.
I'm toying with the idea of camping on Matagorda Island but am open to suggestions from paddlers who have been there.
I consider myself an intermediate-level paddler not afraid to go solo with experience with kayak camping, class III whitewater, and have managed up to 72 river miles in one (very long) day. I am lacking experience with waves, but am quite willing to rectify that, (with support).
Advice? Suggestions? or anyone else interested?
