  Canoeing on the Mississippi river
Posted by: srhmillennium on Aug-05-13 11:54 PM (EST)

I am currently trying to plan a canoe / camping trip starting in mid June of next year ( 2014 ) down the entire length of the Mississippi river ( 2552 miles ) starting from the headwaters in Minnesota. If I can average 35 - 40 miles a day, then I figure that this entire trip will take approx. 10 - 11 weeks. Currently I am looking to find a tandem canoe partner to join me. I am also interested in finding some other people who might like to paddle with me in either going part of the way down the river ( different sections of the river ) or all of the way down the entire length of the Mississippi river. I live in a southwest suburb of Chicago.

I was wanting to do the river but taking over two months off work isn't really an option right now. I live between Morgan city and New Orleans so depending on the dates I would glad to bring the kayak out and paddle some with you. Also if I am able to provide any help between Natchez, MS(my hometown)and the gulf I will do what I can.

I think the actual mileage from Itasca to Mile -0 is 2340 miles etc.
There are about 4 groups of people paddling the whole thing this summer.
I highly suggest you get on facebook and friend the two groups
"Mississippi River Paddlers" and "Lower Mississippi Paddlers" About 20 + people on there that have done the whole thing.
I think 30-45 a day is a lot but doable. My friend Bob Bradford went from Itasca to Mile zero for a world record in 18-days!!! Contact the two groups to get the times what the last 30 people whove done it have done it in
Also google "Quawpaw Canoe Company" and John Ruskey....he knows more about the lower miss than any person.
Also Mike Clark with Big Muddy Adventures out of st louis
a wealth of information.
A girl is doing the whole river solo this summer in a cataraft. you can find her blog on the face book page.
good luck
