Tips:
To see the big whales (Minke, Fin, Humpback occasional Blue), they are mostly on the St. Lawrence, very few up the fjord for any distance.
Belugas ahoy, especially around Baie St. Marguerite where they calve. We paddled with about 30 of them for 2 hours one August day. Never went out in the course of a week without seeing whales either on the river or in the fjord. Third week in August.
Fjord can get mighty rough in a hurry. Know the time of tide, tide changes and wind direction. It matters a lot. The river is basically open ocean paddling, be sure you are up to that.
Dress for the water, it will be in the 50's probably.
The fjord is unbelievably beautiful. Reserve campsites.
BY FARRRRRR the BEST paddle I've ever done. A real treasure. You will get whales within 20 yards of your boat on the river, in the fjord I had a Beluga go under my stern and scratch his back... lifted my kayak about 8" in the air. AWESOME doesn't even begin to describe THAT feeling!
Have fun.. you will never forget it!
