  Missouri paddlers
Posted by: scorpion5 on Feb-09-13 8:29 PM (EST)

Just wondering how may Missouri paddlers we have on this site and where you like to paddle? My favorite river is the Current by Akers Ferry which I float at least twice a year.

  Missouri paddler...............

I am a paddler from Missouri.
Live near Lake of the Ozarks.

Want to hook up with more Missouri paddlers?
Come to the Ozark Rendezvous, on the North Fork of the White river, near Dora, Missouri, this Spring. There is a thread on pnet that generally covers what, where, when, who, why, etc.

MO River paddler, open canoe style, river bottoms, Saline County. I have paddled pretty much all the major rivers in MO at one time or another, love the Buffalo in Arkansas and the North Fork of the White. Don't like the crowded "recreational" rivers in MO in the summer, although I have paddled quite a few miles on the Niangua.

Well, yeah!

I love Missouri rivers, especially the Current River! I also love all my Missouri rivers paddler friends whether they are actually from Missouri or not!

I paddle Mo, but, like Jill and many others, don't live there. But its well worth the drive. Beautiful paddling country. And the nicest bunch or paddlers I've ever met.
You guys got a darned good thing going in the Ozarks, both in Mo and Ar.

I read the thread on the Current R. paddle, toyed with the thought of coming down for the winter paddle - but that would be THREE twelve hundred mile round trips to Mo. in a year... That seems to be bordering on the excessive for me. Gotta save some gas money for "up nort Wisconsin," Minnesota, maybe the UP or somewhere west...

I Live Minutes From St. Francis
Posted by: wildernesswebb on Feb-11-13 8:03 PM (EST)
Paddle it often. 50 minutes to 2 hrs from Current, depending on which access. I'm on the Current at least 1 day most weeks in the summer and 1-2 times a month in the winter. Also Eleven Point is less than 2 hrs away, but I don't seem to get there more than 1-2 times a year because shuttles a bigger PIA. Black, I'm 30-45 minutes away, but don't paddle it as often. WW

Rob and I paddle as much as we can. We live in STL so only a few hours away from the Ozarks. We paddle the Current, St. Francis (but more the whitewater section), Eleven Point, Jacks Fork (haven't done that one in while), Meramec, North Fork of the White, we have also done the Niangua, Niangua is a great fishing river, but go during the week DO NOT go on the weekend. In AR we have paddled the Buffalo and Crooked Creek (would like to do more rivers down there). We are pretty lucky here in the midwest to have so many great rivers close to home. I wish I could be out there now :)

  West Fork of the Black?
Posted by: gremmie on Feb-15-13 9:20 AM (EST)
WW, have you done the west fork of the Black? A Paddler's Guide to MO shows the Centerville to Lesterville stretch as 10 ft./mile gradient. If this is decent it would round out a paddling trip to your area including Big Creek and the Little Saint for those who don't want to tackle the Saint itself. Of course, all rain dependent. I scouted the west fork but couldn't locate a good takeout.

But always thought it probably wouldn't have enough water. You could take out at the Lesterville access or at Twin Rivers Landing (fee area). Used to do the middle fork quite a bit decades ago and the Black itself all the time. Of course, the East fork goes to Johnson Shut Ins.

I rarely do the Black since about 5 years ago. A couple older couples got into an altercation with a bunch of drunk and drug-impaired good 'ol boys. Well, local law enforcement and the prosecutor swept it all under the rug. If not for a local newspaper, they would have gotten away with it with no one the wiser. Still, the perpetrators received only a light slap on the wrist. So, we only go there rarely and "Armed."

Big Creek will be a little low, but doable, as will the Little St. Haven't done either in several years, but should be paddleable. Have a good time, wish I wasn't going to be stuck at work! But I'll get an overnighter on the Current NEXT week.

I am not going anytime soon, but thanks for the info and for sharing the pics!
Is there parking at the Lesterville access? Seems like I remember a spot to take out along there somewhere but the area was surrounded by private property and a bunch on "No Trespassing" signs.
We did find another place where the Black river had changed course and it was a fair ways away from the road.
Its all kind of fuzzy now. Have to check it again.
The West Fork down from Centerville looked interesting. Cherty rocks similar to much of the Ozarks. And there was a very picturesque small gristmill just downstream where that spring enters the creek.
Man, you got a bunch of nice looking canoes. You don't by chance have a 16 to 17 ft. tandem you want to sell do you?

...I have a royalex Bell Northwind I'm rehabilitating. I've cleaned and installed one new seat and oiled the woodwork. Needs a couple rubs touched up and a good cleaning and a couple rivets to close the extra holes in the gunwales. Have someone semi-interested, but not serious yet. Here's a link, latest pics are the last 3:

this spring. The Current, Jacks Fork, and Eleven Point are close by and are among my favorite Missouri Rivers. I like the St. Francis also.

I'm a Missouri paddler in the Kansas City area. I've only lived in the area for a year. So far most of my time has been in Smithville Lake, getting my 4 year old into paddling. Plan on trying the Kaw and Missouri rivers once it warms up. Anyone else in the area?

Current/ Jacks Fork are the best but I'll float anything South of the Missouri. Did the race to the dome last year and had a blast on the Mighty MO.

I hope to do the Sac next year. My everyday paddle is up and back on the Moreau. Not much but its really close and takes about 2 hours.
