  San Diego Bay

Does anybody have any suggestions on where to launch in the northern half of the bay? I found a free public beach by Coronado Bay Bridge, but I would like to explore Pt. Loma lighthouse and the area surrounding it. I have done Mission Bay several times and loved it, especially the open ocean past the channel!

It looks like a nice place to put-in, however, it has no parking except for the street. Is the street parking within kayak cart portage distance? Thank you onnopaddle!

is good for easy parking and launching. It's about five miles or so to Pt Loma from there. How far are you inclined to paddle? While I'm never sure about my schedule if you want some company you can let me know when you may be around and maybe we can have a group. Another common trip is from Mission Bay to Shelter Island in SD Bay. Most do this as a car shuttle though I'm not as much a fan of all that extra driving around.

It used to be the San Diego kayak club paddled from Mission Bay (either Aqua Adventures or one of lagoons on the North side) to Shelter Island about 3 times a year, setting up a car shuttle. The club is more loosely organized now but I think the webpage is still active and you can get on the facebook and email list.

If you want a little more adventure on a low surf day you can launch from the Sunset Cliffs area, but this requires scrambling over boulders and ability to land on rocks (usually by bailing out, and swimming it in) and get your kayak back up the stairs or bluff, so not for the beginner, and best with a small plastic craft.

Thanks Seadart for the info on the San Diego Kayak Club I will check them out. That trip from Mission Bay sounds like a better one because i have a bad back making it difficult to portage my yak over that uneven surface.

Thanks for the heads-up on Shelter Island, I will check it out. Five miles is ok to launch as I have done Big Big Bear Lake in one trip approx 22 miles. that was more than I should have done because I was beat! I have done Mission
Bay in two trips so I wouldn't be so tired. I have a 12' sot rec Kayak but it travels fairly fast and easy. I plan to do the San Diego Bay trip in two trips as well, with the south trip starting at Coronado Island.

  circumnav coronado island

As long as the surf isn't too big a fun trip is to circumnavigate coronado "island". We often unload our boats near the ocean side some blocks south of the hotel there, move the car to very nearby on the bay side then paddle around.
