stopped at a ranger station for advice, and the lady, who drives over a couple of crossings on her way to work, said don't bother. The Indian is reputed to hold up better than other streams in the area, but this has been a very dry year. I ended up paddling around marsh and islands in the Escanaba estuary. At such times it is best to consider putting whitewater thoughts aside, and getting close to the big lakes where the rivers back up and pool. A paddler on an English website visited relatives in the UP and had a very nice trip on the lower Au Train, finishing on Lake Superior on a calm day. Various small to medium sized rivers running into the Great Lakes have good paddling on their last few miles.
