Kayakers (Alpine/Englewood/Piermont) Posted by: mollynina on Aug-29-12 5:13 PM (EST)
Couple wants to meet other independent paddlers for weekday and/or weekend outings on the lower Hudson. We're non-competitive, point-to-point kayakers. Besides the lower Hudson, we also paddle on the NY/CT LI Sound shoreline. We live in Manhattan, and car-top to various put-ins. Please have your own boat and transport.
Have you ever paddled the southwest side of Staten Island, I've seen pictures of a ship graveyard that look so cool and I think it would be a great place to visit, I'm from the Chicago area and have been contemplating a trip out east just for that. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Paddled there about 10 years ago and it's an interesting area. Tugboats, ferry's and various other types of ships are there, all in various stages of decay. It's actually on the western side of Staten Island. You can check it out quite clearly on Bing maps or google maps. Some photo's I took at the time.... http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/367946447HpLaKA Andy
launch from here http://www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/kayak/22 and go right for a few miles. You will come across some old ferrys and barges first but keep going until you get to the old tugs. Worth the trip. I think it might be best to go at high tide but it has been a few years since my wife and I have paddled there.
