Anyone doing any flat-water paddling in North East Ohio, near Akron? I'm thinking Portage, Mogadore, West Branch, LaDue...

I'm a beginner looking for a person/people to get out on the water with.

Two clubs cover paddling in that general region -
"Bradstreet Sea Kayakers" - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bradstreet_Sea_Kayakers/
They are generally flat water focused

And the www.keelhauler.org, more focused on rivers.

...I live in Stow Ohio. Here's the deal: West Branch and La Due are pretty much drained down. However My sister reports that Lake Milton is in pretty good shape.

Likewise Lake Erie is only about an hour away.

I'd do Lake Milton or Erie (but Erie only if the waves are in the 1 to 3 foot range and the wind shoving things on shore. I'd hate to end up in Canada.

Quick Edit: If you are new, I'd say skip Erie unless you have solid rescue skills and/or the waves are less than two feet.

Nimisila is one of my favorites. Hinckley is pleasant but faily small. I live in Wadsworth and paddle the portage lakes, Nimisila, and mogadishu regularly.

Thanks again!

I bought the kayak, and have taken it out on Mogadore twice (plus once on Hudson Springs with my kids). Mogadore was nice, though I'm not a fan of going under Route 43 at dusk (couldn't see the spider webs). The fishing map from Ohio DNR shows a boat ramp in the north-west corner of the lake, off Saxe and Sunny Brook, but I was unable to find it. Does anyone know if it's still there? (I found the boat ramp south of the dam).

Haven't made it out to Nimisila yet, but was planning on it, and I took the kayak out on the other Portage Lakes before I bought it.

Is anyone here a member of Bradstreet Sea Kayakers? I tried joining their Yahoo group, which appears to be active, but haven't been admitted. (I "applied" over two weeks ago).

...Bradstreet kayakers but the important thing is that the landing is there and awaiting you:)

BTW, the water level in Lake Milton is pretty good. I checked it out last weekend. OTOH, West Branch is pretty much history for this season.
