If you're looking for some flatwater that is not too far of a drive (< 3 hours)...
Way up high is Big Bear, Silverwood, and Arrowhead. I've read some great reports from that area. I remember Arrowhead and Big Bear from chilhood trips there.

Castaic, Pyramid, and Piru are along the I5 corridor, if you get out that way. Piru is smaller. There's a trip report on it here http://www.paddling.net/places/showReport.html?285
I've only been to it's shoreline.

Mathews is right near you, but not sure if it's open to outside boats (ANS regs).
