I wish someone who is more familiar with paddling in the SE would respond. The only paddling I've done in SC was on the Edisto river about ten years ago, so I waited to respond. For what its worth, that's a river I'd recommend. No big problems there that I can see for someone new to the sport. Its a blackwater river, tannin stained, which I understand is somewhat unusual for the area. There was a campground near the town of St. George that served us well. We base camped there and did shuttles from it to various sections of the river.

Over on the Paddler's Place forum there's a thread called "SNAKE!!" that was put up. Toward the end of it there are several posts by folks who paddle in the area regularly. I'm sure they could help you more than I can, but I guess they haven't been looking here in the past couple days.

Be careful, come home safe, and thank you.
