I wish someone who is more familiar with paddling in the SE would respond. The only paddling I've done in SC was on the Edisto river about ten years ago, so I waited to respond. For what its worth, that's a river I'd recommend. No big problems there that I can see for someone new to the sport. Its a blackwater river, tannin stained, which I understand is somewhat unusual for the area. There was a campground near the town of St. George that served us well. We base camped there and did shuttles from it to various sections of the river.

Over on the Paddler's Place forum there's a thread called "SNAKE!!" that was put up. Toward the end of it there are several posts by folks who paddle in the area regularly. I'm sure they could help you more than I can, but I guess they haven't been looking here in the past couple days.

Be careful, come home safe, and thank you.

Find a local club or group and they will take you to the best spots for lake paddling, fishing, or whatever you want to do. Most clubs still operate of shoestring budgets, so if you find a local club, go ahead and sign up so you can get a newsletter and start getting local information about who leads trips and such.

This looks like a pretty active group. I'll bet if you contact them they'll be able to help you get started.

Best wishes and welcome to the sport!

And yes, come home safe.

freshwater and in the surf, around the beaches, rocks, and islands. Nice temps...often through a portion of October.

jrafter, I can't help much on the kayak choice but I'd like to talk about your destination. I'm guessing you're talking about the Waccamaw river? If so, and if you're a beginner, you might want to think it through. If you're going there you should go on a weekday. That river gets pretty crowded with jet skis and power boats on the weekends and many of them don't seem to understand common courtesy. Either that or they just don't care. For me, a much better choice is the inlet itself. You can put in at the public landing right beside the Belin church or further down at Morse park. There's also a sandy beach put in just before you get to Huntington Beach SP. It's down a little dirt lane with a dump for oyster shells on it. In the inlet you can avoid most of the power boat traffic and for the most part it's really peaceful and quiet out there, if you stay away from the marina. The only caveat I know of on this is watch the tide. You can get stuck in some areas if you go out on the falling tide and stay too long. I personally like to put in a couple hours before high tide and I can stay pretty much as long as I like. Hope this helps some.
