They were in my area yesterday and today, had planned on paddling across Oneida Lake with them, but then work got in the way.
Side note... a few years back Bill Quick, aka KayakGuy did all this and more. He actually did the Champlain section of canals down to Albany as well as the Erie from Buffalo to Albany. Got NONE of the fanfare and media participation that these guys are getting. He did it to report to the head of the Canal system about how the canal system could be improved to entice kayakers and other paddle craft usage. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of his report and recommendations. Moral of the story... have a PR Staff to coordinate and publicize and you will get more notice. And maybe more success in attaining your goals, which in Bill's case was better launch and landing areas at locks, more camping areas set aside at locks and on public lands that the canal traverses, and access to drinking water, bathrooms and showers at locks. |
