West PA solo canoe rendezvous 2012
Posted by: 85dragonfly on Apr-01-12 7:43 PM (EST)

The 5th Annual Western PA Solo Canoe Rendezvous will be held on the first full weekend of June in 2012. This is Friday through Sunday June 1,2, and 3. We're a Go. It will be held again at the usual site at Cooper’s Lake Campground in Portersville PA. The Rendezvous is a gathering of solo canoe enthusiasts in particular (though tandems are by no means excluded)(kayaks? Well...let's not go there). It features various manufacturers and designers of solo canoes with demo models of their boats available for test-paddling; demonstrations of, and informal instruction in, FreeStyle paddling; assorted programs on various aspects of canoe design, construction, and use in the real world; food; sometimes some live entertainment (depends on who we can lean on) on one or both evenings (Fri and Sat); Dead Fish Polo; a Candlelight Paddle on Saturday evening; pick-up paddling trips on local streams/rivers; informal gear/boat sales and swaps; a pot-luck Vegetarian dinner on the Friday night that can’t be beat: and Goodness Knows Whatall. It is an opportunity to immerse yourself in solo canoes for 60 some hours (or more) to the exclusion of all other reality.
Everyone is encouraged to bring their own solo craft, since at least part of the experience is being able to look over (and perhaps paddle) a large array of classic solo canoes that you just don’t see all that often.
There is no charge for the Event per se, though the Campground does charge a modest fee for Day-Trippers, and of course assesses a fee for camping. We are beginning to assemble info on this year's edition on the website wpascr.org, and will add to that as things develop. That website will also contain info on directions to find us, and a link to the campground’s site so you may contact them directly.

Why a vegetarian dinner? Just curious.

There are a fair number of vegetarians

attending. And going out to eat and finding something other than rabbit food is always a challenge..so they decided to have an onsite vegetarian dinner.

And us carnivores found the food just fine. There are restaurants pretty nearby if you have to have a steak or you can always bring one to grill.

one of our veggie folks thought it would be a nice little thing for the Friday night, and it proved to be a popular addition, so we still do it. Lots of very creative (and very tasty) stuff shows up on the table. It's just a fun-thing, no big Statement or anything. Just stuff yourself with really good food, and visit with folks, is all...

There is info on ordering this year's edition of the Rendezvous t-shirt if you're into that, and also some info on what sorts of edibles will be available on-site - both these may be found at the website wpascr.org Click on Message Boards, then on 2012 info.

  small local detour
Posted by: 85dragonfly on May-22-12 9:02 AM (EST)
Note please that the small bridge over Muddy Creek on Currie road leading to the entrance to Cooper's lake is under repair and closed. The state DOT has posted orange Detour signs which will take you to the Campground. It's several miles round-about, but will only take you a few minutes to negotiate. There will be small signs along that detour route referring to the Rendezvous so you will know you are on the right path.
