Float plan: Launch from Athens State Launch. Explore up the Murderer's Creek to Sleepy Hollow reservoir/dam, come back out on to Hudson to explore Middle Ground Flats(Island)Forest Preserve, then possibly downstream to Roger's Island(Catskill) or upstream to Coxsackie. Circumnavigation of Athens-Hudson Lighthouse to complete the trip. Not a mileage marathon, just a social day to kick off Spring cruising.

Open to April paddle date suggestions. Cold water wear and gear a must. I'll check back here once a week to see who interested. (Or you can always email me directly about rendezvous/questions.)

Hey Bob,
I'ma gonna goose ole DaggerMatt and see if he might be coerced. Heck it's west of Hartford right?
I've got plans for the last weekend in April. But if it doesn't rain hard in New Hampshire even those will be moot.
So pick a date and let's see what comes of it.

and might be there. 4/27 is Janices Birthday, so I'd say the 28th is out. Pretty sure I cancelled out of the westfield race on the 21st, so that's a possibility. I could use a cruise. Aarons probably out, so I'd either solo the Reflection or tandem the Dumoine if anyone was interested in that.

I'm gonna' check with Eck (who I led down the path of westfield tandem, only to let him down) and see if he'd want to hit this.

Up in the air about everything lately, so not confirming anything right now. I've gotten real wishy-washy lately. Was supposed to be out poling today, but wasn't up to standing in the rapids with snow and sleet...

Unless someone books my time nothing is slated for 4/29. I'd be up for it.

Time? Does 10 a.m. sound reasonable? I'm not a big fan of the early-early myself unless there's some tidal reason--And in this case, this far up the Hudson there definitely is not. Current from the Atlantic is greatly diminished here, usually allowing for pretty easy navigation in all directions. But heed should be taken of increased boat traffic in the shipping channel/foul wind and weather conditions(Official Disclaimer for any of you fence-sitters out there).

Launch site: Athens Kayak/Canoe Launch is at the end of Fourth Street in Athens(Greene County, NY). It is a designated Greenway Water Trail Site, with restrooms, picnicking, dining/restaurants, and retail establishments. Just north of Catskill(Exit 21 of NYS Thruway/I-87(So yes, Tommy--It is definitely west of Hartford.) Drive north on Rt. 385 for 4.0 miles(But if you're coming south from Cosackie on Rt. 385, then you drive 6.8 miles.) At the center of Athens, turn east(toward the river)off Rt. 385, onto Second Street. Drive downhill for 0.05 mile. At Second Street, turn right on to South Water Street. Park at Fourth Street where a pier and river access has been recently created especially for us paddlers(Ya see, someone does love us afterall.)

Athens was once a port for whalers and sailing ships. Early inhabitants engaged in piracy(Thought seriously about it as a career myself sometimes--But the wife she...)More recently, Athens was the backdrop for the 2005 movie "The War of the Worlds."(Tom Cruise, anyone?)

I could've set the launch for this at Dutchman's Landing in Catskill. But I vetoed the idea due to the sometimes inordinate amount of motorized penis-envying jet skiers.(If you like to jet ski and paddle, we'll take it up with you later.)

I have it on good advice that The Murderer's Kill(Creek)should be attempted during flood(high tide_)in early Spring. And Andy, if you make this date, I promise to invade Split Rock one of these days. That is, if I manage to first pull out of the Campmor parking lot alive.

How long a paddle do you plan? Time and distance. If I'm driving 5 hours round trip (290 miles) I'm hoping it would be 15-20 miles (4-6 hours). If that's the case and weather is decent I'd be real interested. For that drive I'd probably not commit until the evening before based on the forecast.

Eventhough I posted this day trip, I do not consider myself leader of it--More like, just wanted to see if anybody was interested in partnering-up(as some of us here have done previously a couple times in April on the Hudson)for a kick off the Spring outing. I table it to who shows up on the day of, as to just where and how much water we want to cover. The invitation to paddle is a social one. If nobody showed up, I have no problem going out by myself for the day.

Now, if it's just a matter of minimal training miles and as to whether or not it is worth a five-hour drive to paddle five, fifteen or even fifty miles --Only you can decide that.

Marshal, the kayak race at the New Paltz Regatta on April 29 has almost completely fizzled out the past couple of years since you stopped running it. I wish outfitters would encourage towns to run kayak events by getting involved.

D.

I never ran the regatta, just provided logistical help, guerilla marketing and some motivation.

As I'm alreadyed owned by my own biz I'd rather take a day out of my 8 day a week schedule and do something for fun rather than put the effort into something that feels a whole lot like work.

With luck, I'm going paddling that day not working.

See ya on the water,

  Who's still in?
Posted by: spiritboat on Apr-24-12 11:10 AM (EST)
Well, we've had a great deal of rain the past few days. So I expect many a whitewater enthusiast here to bow out from this flatwater cruise(I can always slice the local white nearby on weekdays myself, when there less of a crowd.)

Forecast isn't great, but if conditions aren't all that dreadful this Sunday, I won't sulk about rainy weather and will head to Athens as planned. However, if no one checks in here with at least a "maybe"--I won't rush to make it to the put-in by 10 AM(more like 11 AM, as I have a function to attend Saturday evening.)

I'll send any responders my cell number by Friday to coordinate any last minute vous/cancelation by foul weather arrangements. (I'd post my number for all, but don't want any pitchmen from Nigeria phoning to say I've won a sweepstakes that only requires some personal info to collect;-.)

I'm a definite maybe, but leaning strongly towards a road trip unless the weather is absolutely horrendous. Still hoping for the 10:00 am launch so I'd have time to extend the paddle solo if the group paddle turns out to be shorter than I like. I will post back here Saturday evening by 6:00 pm (if that works for you) with my decision to go or not. Hope we get some more interest, would love to put some faces to the names I've bandied about with here on P-net over the years!

Eminently doable. I'll be there by 10,afterall. Should have two local paddlers who never heard of pnet joining us.

radskier-That's a long drive..I admire the dedication.

glider-I wish you guys were making it too! Still got that lil' rubber ducky yas gave me in my old truck's window...Enjoy the new digs.

So, no rack == no kayak transport == no kayaking this weekend.

Posted by: kathleen on Apr-28-12 10:54 AM (EST)
Hi, just heard about your paddle plan..am thinking of joining you. The river is looking very inviting these days. I live nearby and have used the launch numerous times.

To amend the access info a bit, the launch is best accessed by turning on 4th st. off of rt 385/Washington st, (right turn if traveling from the south, left if from north). There is now a "kayak launch" sign there. Part of Water st is now one way, so if you came from second st you'd have to circle around. There is parking for at least 12 cars right at the launch. There is a porta-potty nearby.

As for retail and restaurants, options are somewhat limited in Athens, so plan accordingly. There is a small cafe on water st.; not sure of the hours. Crossroads Brewery on Second has excellent beer for a post-paddle stop. Cameo's restaurant for Italian dinners, and a Stewarts for gas, ice cream and snacks. There's a deli in town as well but I've never been. That's pretty much it. Across the river in Hudson, 15 minute drive, there are many more options.

10am launch still the plan?

Robin

I'm pretty close to Athens as well and have paddled out of the Village launch before. I will plan to meet up with the faceless names of p.net as well (except I know Marshall)! I'll probably paddle a yellow Avocet and will have at least one other p.net friend with me.
Best,

Just emailed Spiritboat to confirm. Wish I was as close as you all seem to be, but to paddle in a new location on a sunny day with hopefully a bit of chop to make it fun will be worth the 5 hour round trip drive. And just the chance to put a few more faces with a few more p-netters just adds to the allure! See you tomorrow at 10:00!

Thanks for the paddle guys (and Robin!!) It was nice to meet you all and put some faces with some p-net handles. Small world in so many ways, Wetzool working for a friend and paddle companion of mine's brother, meeting a p-netter that saved my roll last summer at a rest stop on the river, crazy coincidence! Paddling past Henry Hudson's vessel the Half Moon at dock on the river that bears his name on my first paddle on that river was very cool! Good conversation, serious slog into some serious headwinds (15-20 gusting to 30) was lots of fun. No, seriously!
Hope I didn't come off as anti-social at the end of the paddle. I tend to get into a zone at the end of a paddle and kick it into sprint mode for the last couple miles. My regular paddle companions are used to it! I kind of forgot I was with folks not used to my eccentricities! Sorry! If any of you ever want to paddle upstate (as in WAY upstate!), drop me a line. I'd love to repay the favor you all showed me.
And next time, hopefully there is enough time after the paddle to tip a couple brews with you.
Thanks again,
Bob
PS Spiritboat, it was definitely worth the drive down!

All one could want in a day trip, and then some: Divese historic scenery...Soaring birds of prey. Personable good paddling company...And one peppy batch of 2 and 3 knot shifting headwinds--Just to keep things..."interesting"(those winds almost began on Hollywood movie cue, kicking-up midway through our main crossing.) I for one, prefered them much better at our backsides as "turn-tail-fer-home" winds.)

But you folks made it all just a breeze.

John, Pete, Bob, Robin and Marshall--Thanks for contributing to a great day.

And Radskierman, eccenticities??? I never heard of such a thing in paddlers...

(Also sorry, I couldn't stick around longer at the Crossroads Brewery afterwards, because that was one outrageous pint of post-paddle hops!)
