Posted by: wildernesswebb on Jan-03-12 11:46 AM (EST)

O.K., let's go out on a limb. Permanent Spring Rendezvous to be FIRST WEEKEND IN MAY. We can decide permanent Fall Dates around the campfire this spring. Now, we need to decide on site. I'm thinking we make the OFFICIAL Spring Rendezvous site the North Fork and Fall Rendezvous the Current every year? What say ye, "Yay" or "Nay?"

Yes, Yes and Yes! It all works for me! I love your idea Terry and as I recall this was something that a large portion of us talked about in the fall; doing the spring at the North Fork and fall at the Current. I know not everybody will agree, with this size of a group that will never happen.

Happy New Year!

I will be out of the spring rendezvous. Probably can't go this year anyway. That is always Nurses pinning at work that Thursday. I might come down for a Friday-Monday sometime.

Way to "step up to the plate".

I hope everybody who wants to be there can be.
I know it won't work for everyone.
It never works for everyone.

It will save the hassle of the date campaigning, and jockeying for position, from now unti the end of
April.

I'm not sure we can promise our appearance on those dates either, but you can bet we'll try.
If we can't be there every day; we'll try for some of them.

First weekend in May ... yay

Now back to the question I raised on the other thread:

How am I going to get through the hard water season without my daily ration of checking the Spring Ozark Dates thread?

A more germane question for me is where IS the North Fork?

  Where is it?

The North Fork of the White river is located in south central Missouri; about as far as you can go south without getting into Arkansas.

Most of the river is in southeastern Ozark county, and eastern Douglas county, Missouri. Shortly after the North Fork's junction with Bryant Creek, it ends at the Tecumseh access/Norfork Lake.

About 49 miles of river total.
It's upper reaches are in the Mark Twain National Forest.
Difficulty class I & II; very seldom II, unless there is high water.
The river is fed by quite a few springs; especially the section below Twin Bridges, which is on Mo. Hwy. 14, between Richville & Siloam Springs, Mo.

....about 20 minutes northwest of West Plains, MO. About an hour and a half southwest of Emminence. Here's a few albums, including the 2011 Spring Rendezvous album. Twin Bridges is the campground, but if you want to rent a cabin I would strongly suggest River of Life Farms, and come to the campground for the evening campfire. Here are links to 3 picture albums, ROLF, Twin Bridges:

Cabins at River of Life = $$$
Posted by: TexasLady on Jan-04-12 8:55 PM (EST)
We changed over to River of Life last year after we left the nasty-nasty cabin we had rented at Twin Bridges.

River of Life was very nice and very clean, but extremely pricey, even for the cheapest room. The cabins are even more expensive. On top of that, you are given instructions to clean your own room (including the kitchen and bath) and strip linens upon leaving. I thought that was rather strange, especially considering the cost of the room.

If anyone wants details about our experience with the cabins at Twin Bridges, email me. I won't publish it here. I also found the campground bathrooms to be pretty awful, but I did not see the shower house. Were they better than the bathrooms near the entrance?

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the campgrounds on the Current River, but I've made two trips to the North Fork, and stayed at two different campgrounds (not counting River of Life) and both were enough to ruin the river for me. River of Life would be great except for the cost.

Is it possible to river camp on the North Fork, or is most of the land along the river privately owned?

  River camping - difficult
Posted by: PamThePaddler on Jan-05-12 10:38 AM (EST)
River camping not possible because of all the private land. Rob and I have looked at the National Park campground, all they have is a pit toilet, and the campsites are all concrete. I personally don't think that Twin Bridges bathrooms or showers are that bad, I can't speak about the cabins because I only camp out in our tent. This isn't Pulltite or Round Spring and yes I think people are spoiled, remember you are camping and not everything is going to be perfect. I think one of the main reasons we used Twin Bridges was because of it's location, shuttles are pretty easy, plus we were able to negotiate a lower camping rate with the owner. For myself and Rob we have no problem staying at Twin Bridges.

  OK
Posted by: TexasLady on Jan-05-12 12:09 PM (EST)
I was pretty sure that was the case with the private land issue. Couldn't remember for sure.

I'm glad that others didn't have my experience at Twin Bridges or other campgrounds on the North Fork. It seems that most folks were happy with the campground itself.

I've certainly done my share of roughing it or camping in campgrounds with no amenities other than a pit toilet. I've never minded primitive or even a pit toilet.

My expectations are a little higher when I'm paying for a cabin, but my expectations were reasonable for a river camp cabin. I've tolerated some pretty bad places, but the entire reason we left the Rendezvous early was due to the condition of the cabin.

I did enjoy myself around the campfire with friends and was glad I had the opportunity to visit with everyone last year.

trip on your river in question, but I won't. I was young, I was hanging out with the wrong crowd in those days, and I remember very little except the night in jail. Or was it in a church basement? "Not sure"..................

I might be able to attend this spring and those dates are in my calendar. I have every intention of becoming semi retired again. Lodge life is entirely too time consumming and I've got a house to build up here anyways. My teardrop trailer has not made a roadtrip in two years. I'll haul tools and building supplies back up here in it after the Rendezvous.

that if you spread a circle of cuscous around Bob's tent during the night, he can not get out early in the morning to throw wake-up walnuts at you.

However, from what little I know about Bob he might just store some extra walnuts in the tent and throw them at you anyway.

I prefer mango-curry cuscous but have been known to eat a few different versions. If I make it up there we can form our own paddling group. However, with all the good cooks that show up I will not limit my food choices to just cuscous.

Yes...I am very much for setting up dates/sites in advance...so that we'all can make plans...and I like the 1st weekend in May for this and on-going Spring Rendezvous and to be at the N Fork.

It is true that it may not meet everyone's needs, but at least the information is out there, and perhaps folks can adjust and make changes w/ knowing in advance!!

Please put me in for this...and looking forward to the next get-together!!

Question: Is the site to make reservations is the Twin Bridges Campground...can someone let me know so that I can make reservations?

Thanks,

  Twin Bridges
Posted by: pblanc on Jan-30-12 11:01 AM (EST)
Twin Bridges is where we stayed last spring and I assume would do so again this year. I was comfortable there. It is close to the road and there can be a bit of road noise from traffic going over the bridge.

The owner has quite a large field out back of the main campground area that he more or less turned over to us, so I'm not sure that reservations are necessary.

I hope that Pam & Rob will assist us all by contacting the owner, and working their magic with him again.

Please & thank you Pam & Rob.............

P.S. It's a shame there are no walnut trees nearby. As for couscous & instant mashed potoatos; it is still my contention that both are possible material to use in a pinch for blacktop road repairs.

I emailed Jim at Twin Bridges today to ask him if he would give us the same rate as last year, as soon as I hear back from him I'll put a post up. I can't imagine that he wouldn't, that time of year isn't that busy so I am sure he would like the business. He is a pretty easy guy.

Looking foward to seeing everyone, it will be here before we know it.

Mix cous cous & instant mashed potatos.

Apply to area of road needing patch.

Spray with cheap, flat black paint from wally world.

I'm pretty sure that's how Missouri Dept.of Transportation does blacktop road repairs.
As soon as the repairs are made they start breaking apart.

  OK, I get it Bob
Posted by: vic on Jan-31-12 4:18 PM (EST)
In that case it would be better if Missouri did not paint the patches. That way the patches would be a different color than the asphalt making it easier for drivers to avoid the "stealth" potholes that will still be there after the patch job.

  Twin Bridges is a go!
Posted by: PamThePaddler on Jan-31-12 4:19 PM (EST)
Got an email back from Jim at Twin Bridges and he is happy to "host" our group again. The cost is $ 8.00 per person per night for camping, if you need electric (he does have a few spots) you'll have to call him to get that rate. Reservations are welcomed but I would wait until it get's closer, we want to make sure the river isn't in flood, you just never know.

Not sure what these rumors are that Bob is spreading about me teaching a "roll", hell I haven't even been taught it yet. We start that on 2/12 (I am taking a kayak pool class), this is for whitewater. I will continue to be in my canoe when I paddle non-whitewater rivers. Yes, I have lost my mind, not sure how Rob talked me into this whitewater stuff!

See ya soon!

  River conditions?
Posted by: vic on Feb-29-12 2:57 PM (EST)
I don't know what's going on down there in Missouri this winter, but here in Iowa we've had very little precipitation until some rain over the last week or so. Even after that rain, the rivers here are still VERY low.

I know it is still early yet, but now that I am not working I need something else to worry about :-)

So here are my questions:

Have you guys in the Ozarks had enough precipitation to put enough water in the rivers to make them canoeable? (I'm still hoping for a pre or post rendezvous Buffalo River trip.)

Is the North Fork of the White spring fed so that it will be floatable without rain?

Just a note: even if the answer to these questions is no, I still plan on seeing you folks first week in May

  River conditions ok!
Posted by: PamThePaddler on Mar-01-12 9:35 AM (EST)
Vic, river conditions are pretty good here, I looked at the USGS this morning and there is a lot of green which is normal. Current at Akers is at 1.47 which is good, North Fork is at 2.99 which is good, that river is best at 3 to 3.5, when it's a bit higher is when it's more fun with the wave trains. Last year it had just come out of flood stage so it was moving but it was a blast. Hopefully March and April will continue to bring some rain, but who knows, we have had such a none winter who knows what spring will bring, we'll have to wait and see. Not matter what I am with you and will be at the Rendezvous in May (as long as it doesn't flood, that would be bad).

Looking forward to seeing everyone in a few months!
Pam

Vickie, when we decided on a "Permanent date," we knew it wouldn't be ideal for everyone. I still believe it will be easier for most. I hate that it won't work for you.

The North Fork of the White gets low enough in the summer that it gets too low above Twin Bridges AT TIMES. A little rain and it's good at least up to Hebron. Just below Twin Bridges, Spring Creek flows into the North Fork. That should add enough flow if we get no rain. With our springs, there's always enough water to paddle somewhere! Been to the North fork in August three or four times. If the water is low, we WILL see carnage at "The Falls." It was pretty easy with the high water. At lower levels, you have to pick one of 3 lines or you could swim. Here's a few North Fork pictures from 3 "Low water" trips.

The best paddler on the river was the only one besides me with a PFD on! Reminds me of the "Tourists" Chuck, Gwen, Margaret, and I "Rescued" last year. Never forget that kid crying out "Don't let me drown, don't let me drown!" Swimming's easy enough in a "Controlled" situation; capsizes are never a well "Controlled" situation. A few years ago on the Black, I paddled past some "Tourists" that looked at us with disdain and said "I guess THEY can't SWIM!" I couldn't hold it in, I said "If you spend enough time on the river, you learn that "Sh!+ happens!"
Then, I left the a$$holes behind!
As for the original question of Vic's, I've been to the North Fork in August with Margaret, with Rob, with Boyscout, and with Wally. All four times there was enough water to paddle from Hebron Bridge down. Look at this guy, he and his "Better half" sure makes it look purty, huh?

  Update

-- Last Updated: Mar-14-12 1:23 PM EST --

Only seven weeks to this year's Spring Rendezvous on the North Fork.

I NEED A PADDLING FIX.

The weather looks good for canoeing here through Sunday and into next week (temps each day in the 70's to about 80). However the rivers don't. Checked the gauge at my favorite day trip put in on the Raccoon River and it was reading about 185 cfs and going down. About 600cfs is a comfortable level. I've done it lower than 600 cfs but can't remember avoiding dragging at lower than 400 cfs.

The median for this date is about 410 cfs, but usually a lot of the water in the river is in solid form at this time of year. Even though there is no ice anywhere around it seems to me the water is still too cold to do a lot of dragging.

I think I need to arrange for a kegger on the river so we can all piss in the river and raise the water level.

I am getting the feeling that if I don't take my canoes out soon my they will stage a mutiny. With the weather this nice they're not buying the smiles and hugs in the garage anymore.

It's ok to paddle on a lake until you

"We don't need no stinkin' lakes"!

Just back from the MWA whitewater races on the St. Francis River. The water level was "awesome"; higher than I've ever seen it, or paddled it before.
On first day of races (saturday); only the expert class of racers were allowed on the river. Even a few of them had to be rescued.
I worked with the race safety team; the
Safety Director was a guy I helped get started in whitewater paddling & swiftwater rescue many years ago.

Came back with a new Mohawk Solo 13; it came all the way from the Washington, D.C. area to "find me".

Camped with Pam, JoAnne, Rob & Pete.
Had a good time.
Looking forward to the Vous.

  Sunday races
Posted by: pblanc on Mar-19-12 8:38 AM (EST)
The water level was higher on Sunday than it had been on Saturday.

I watched three K-1 boaters attempt the course, all of whom missed every gate at Big Drop and wound up swimming to boot. There were 2 rescue Shredders in addition to a number of rescue kayaks and each time someone swam the Shredders took off downstream, then had to be carried back up above Big Drop and back down the rocks to the water, which took about 20 minutes.

It was slightly less boring than watching paint dry.

I overheard one of the rescue boaters talk about his experience on the Castor River on Friday and he made it sound pretty hairy. It made me feel a little better about missing it.

  Reservations at Twin Bridges
Posted by: PamThePaddler on Mar-22-12 2:04 PM (EST)
Just an FYI for everyone - I received a phone call from Twin Bridges indicating that because of the warm weather people are getting out earlier and starting to make reservations for this spring/summer. So if you think you are coming to Rendezvous you may want to make your reservations. When you call make sure you mention that you are with the Ozark Rendezvous group and the rate we have is $ 8.00 per night, per person, if they question you tell them that I (Pam Huddleston)already arranged with Jim.

Got my reservation in. Arriving Monday, April 30th and departing Sunday, May 6th.

Only five more weeks. I used to be able to do five weeks standing on my head. However, that was while I was waiting for my discharge and before I lost my hair. I have no idea where my hair went, I just know it was over a long period of time. Have you seen it?

Can't help you with the hair, Vic.

Mine is lost too.

I'll miss the 'vous this year, too. I was really looking forward to it, but I'll be on a company paid trip to China for a few weeks.

PJC suggested they have rivers there, too, but given the water quality, I'd need more shots!

While I'm eating fried chicken feet, and donkey meatballs, I'll be thinking of the tasty pot-luck I'll be missing!

Have a safe trip. Hope to see you on the Wisconsin, or the fall 'vous.

P.S. Yanoer: Are you going to make a rendezvous appearance this year? Or are you just wandering around, looking for something to stir with a stick.......... like you used to do; when you were 4 years old & had your first puppy, which provided you with deposits to be stirred with said stick?
You Indiana cornfield, ditch water runner!

I don't think I'd have a chance to win the presidency, though, since TheBob's PAC (paddlecraft acquiring committee) has much more money than my grass roots disorganization.

I'm not sure I could sustain a negative campaign by TheBob. He can be pretty cruel and I'm very sensitive.

I can't imagine what inuendos he'd put forth to sully my reputation. Oh, the horrors.

  First Paddle of Season
Posted by: vic on Apr-05-12 11:52 AM (EST)
As far as canoeing goes this retirement thing is a bust. It has hardly rained or snowed since I retired after the end of the 2011 legislative session last June. I'm not complaining. I have not been up to the statehouse since they came into session this year. I am not even reading the legislative coverage in the newspaper. However, I had expected to do a lot more canoeing as a now retired non-productive member of society.

I was finally was able to get the canoe on a river last Saturday. It was a very narrow window of opportunity. We were on the Middle Raccoon River in Central Iowa, putting in at Redfield around noon and taking out at Pleasant Valley. A leisurely paddle of about eight miles. A comfortable level for this stretch is about 600cfs. Based on our past experience the "suck point" for this stretch is 300cfs. Below 300cfs it sucks to be on this stretch - too much scrapping and dragging.

Eight of us put in around noon with the river gauge at Redfield reading 317cfs, by the time we took out at Pleasant Valley around 6pm the gauge had dropped to 292cfs.

True to our past experiences I would not like to be on the river at any lower flow. Today the gauge is at 181cfs with no real rain in the ten day forecast except for a 50% chance of thunderstorms on Saturday.

When we put in around noon it was 58 and cloudy. Clouds left about 1:30pm and temps rose up to the upper 70's during the afternoon. I saw my first Great Blue Heron of the season on the river just after put in. They haven't taken up residence on our pond yet. Saw a whitetail deer going over the bank on river right about a half mile from the put in. There were tons of Canada Geese along the river all day. Heard a kingfisher at lunch.

We scraped a lot over many rocks as the day went on and river levels dropped. The surface of the river did not show many of the rocks that were hidden just below. Need another application of paint on the bottom of the old Mohawk Solo 14. Wind picked up out of the SSE around 2:30pm as the temps increased with the approaching warm front.

All in all a great day to be on the river. While I would have liked more water at least we didn't have to get out and drag (just barely.)

I seriously doubt there will be enough water in the rivers to get out again before the Vouz. Taking the canoe out on our pond does not seem likely. We already had an algae bloom before the first of April.

The algae on our 7 acre pond has really become a problem in recent years since our up-watershed neighbors have taken their land out of CRP and have been heavily planting corn and soy beans. When we first moved out here in 1986 most of the surrounding land was in CRP and we did not see algae on the pond until mid August. Even then it was only a little around the shoreline. Last summer almost half the pond was covered with algae by mid June.

We also used to have tons of pheasants. I haven't seen nor heard a pheasant in our area for at least two or three years. Now there is talk about stocking pheasants to bring back pheasant hunting. That sure as hell won't work. The hunters will have their take for one season and without habitat the remaining pheasants will have problems surviving for future seasons. Sure wish the neighbors would put some of their land back in CRP.

So here I am holding my breath for the next three weeks to pass quickly so I can get down to the Ozarks where there are good friends and plenty of clear water to canoe on.

I don't think I can make the Vous this year. Otherwise, you know I'd be happy to bring you along if I could.

I've just spent too much money buying and bringing a used vehicle "up to snuff" to make that long a paddling trip this spring. Fall should be no problem, however.

I think Gary is completely without a car now and from what I hear he's planning on bicycling everywhere for a while, so unless I hear otherwise I'd say he's probably out too. Eric and Rena might be possibilities for a lift and so are Tom & Laurel.

Good Luck! I'll be here avidly following the reports and gnashing my teeth. Wish I could...this will be the first I've ever missed, I think.

  BUT I HAVE TO!
Posted by: PJC on Apr-21-12 8:22 AM (EST)
-- Last Updated: Apr-21-12 8:50 AM EST --

Believe me, if there was any way to avoid missing I would. I guess I can still afford a lottery ticket or two, but I wouldn't hold much hope in my luck with lotteries.

Last lottery/raffle I entered was back with my fish club. I bought $20 worth of tickets for aquarium supplies, donated by fish shops, held to finance our annual show. (Did it to help support the club.) The shops got free advertizing to a targeted audience of very avid fish keepers in the show booklet for contributing merchandise. The owner of the shop I was then working at wouldn't contribute because it was in a different town from where the show was held and so felt there wouldn't get any business from the ad. I was ashamed that my shop's ad was so glaringly absent, so I bought a small tank and filter to contribute. Paid extra for it. Since because it wasn't for my own use, I didn't get my 20% employee discount on that purchase. After contributing it I then won it - So I paid too much for a set-up I didn't need and then paid another $20 to "win" it. Even when I win a lottery, I lose.

Be better not to count on financing paddle trips that way, I'm thinking.

Its not so bad - when I bought my last truck I paid almost my entire year's full-time income at the farm for it. I'll be back on track financially from this one in another month or two, and I'm not even working all those long hours any more... and many of us have missed a vous or two. I'll be back this fall.

I'll be following the trip with interest.

  But you will miss
Posted by: Boyscout on Apr-21-12 11:23 PM (EST)
With me bringing the new canoe this time. there could be some good photo ops this trip.
what did you end up doing about a new rack with the truck?

  Mike
Posted by: PJC on Apr-22-12 10:30 AM (EST)
If you don't swim in the Wildfire, you won't swim in the Guide/Freedom solo. That's a nice stable canoe - just like that one I used to bring down that was labeled "Canoe" years ago. I'm not driving that far to see you not swim. ;-)
As far as the racks go, they arrived Friday. I'm just going with the standard racks made by the outfit that made the topper. I tried to find bolt-on artificial rain gutters like the ones I had on my old topper so I could use my old racks. No go. It seems the ONLY people who have them any more is Thule and they want $80 for four pieces of metal 2"X4" or so. That's just too much and my old racks don't fit them anyhow. So then I'd have to buy new racks also. WAY too much money.
Somehow if a company gets big enough to monopolize a market, that's OK by me. Good products should win their market share. But if they then abuse that monopoly by charging such exorbitant prices and forcing me to buy yet more of their products just to get a boat to the water, I get POd and will go anywhere and do anything to avoid encouraging that sort of behavior by buying their products, however good they are. Others make perfectly workable racks also. So I got the whole rack, crossbars uprights and all from the topper maker for $100 - only $20 more than Thule wanted for less than a single pound of steel. I'm altering it slightly to beef it up and allow more versatile strapping arrangements. It'll be mounted by this afternoon. Tomorrow or Tuesday I'll cut and paint some 2X4 extensions to carry at least two tandems. That'll probably involve a little "tweaking" to keep the boats from "catching air" and hurting highway gas mileage but, once done, I'll be set for the life of the truck.

I was informed of this event by Anita Goss. I am thinking of coming up that way and paddle with you guys next week. Is there room? I can camp on Anita's camp site but will call next week to see about getting my own site if there is still one available. What days are you paddling? How many people are you expecting? I have paddled the Buffalo River a few times and really enjoyed my time there and this sounds like a mark up from that.
