Canoe trip to Adirondacks in 2012
Posted by: leowis1 on Nov-19-11 7:43 PM (EST)

Hello--I live in SE PA and had twin boys age 5. They'll be 6 in Feb. I bought a canoe 2yrs ago and we all love going out paddling. I've only done day trips. I would like to take them to the Adirondacks next summer for several days. I've never been there before. I think I read that the Fish Ponds are great for little kids.

I am a little nervous about taking them that far away without knowing anything about the Adirondacks. I would like to know if there is anybody else out there looking to get a group trip together next summer? I feel that for our first trip up there it would be fun and helpful to be part of a group.

Please let me know.

Regards,
Leo

I would recommend buying both Dave's book and the Paddler's map - there is a 5th edition of the Paddler's map in the works:

Fish Creek Pond has a very large

busy campsite.

But it is the jumping off point to a number of small ponds that can delight. Most have no vehicle access but you will see people. The portages are short for the most part. The book and map recommended by others is very informative. The ponds are small enough that they are sheltered. There are many other ADK paddling destinations but this one is the best for small kids. Swimming galore.

This is a good opportunity to be enjoying your kids by yourself for a few days

The area abuts the St Regis Canoe Area. Now you may hear about it referred to as wilderness. You will see loons and hear coyotes perhaps and be able to fish but you will not be far from people.

There is a whole board devoted to Adirondack paddling at http://adkforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=62

  ADK's

You are making a good choice. Good info posted. I would like to add: 1) Quiet Water Canoe Guide - NY. Great intro to the area and all the Adk's. The Ciley book is great, but it is costly and (I feel) geared towards the more experienced. 2) Rollins Pond Campground is next to Fish Creek and much quieter. You can do alot of great day trips from there and even get into Floodwood and Follensby Ponds for a "wilderness" overnighter. 3) The SRCA gets very busy during the summer and especially on the weekends. Try and go up the week before Labor Day - alot of people leave to get the kids ready for school. Camping in June can be buggy. Best of luck - we have been going up there "pre-kids" and with them for over 15 years and still love it.

My experience (my youngest is now 26!) is that the gentle approach is best. Think of their fun all the time. The moment they show signs of boredom change something. Bring lots of snacks and keep their bellies full. Have you ever camped with them? If not consider camping in the back yard and see how that goes. Then maybe some short trips where you camp by the car one night and take a short day paddle. Ease into it. If you push and they get unhappy you will do more harm than good. I honestly think you don't need to go far from home at first and it might be best to stay near home. A five mile drive to a new place is an adventure for kids that age. Just my opinion - I'm sure others will disagree.

  dont forget.....

...to look on P-Net's launch map, that will give you some idea of the fish creek to Rollin pond area. Look for RT 3 and Rt 30 intersection between Tupper lake and Saranac Lake then follow 30 north to Fish pond area. You can use those campgrounds as a base and go to other destinations. be aware the the wind is a major factor in the ADK's. So where you stay and where you paddle might be 2 different places on any given day.

Lake Placid area is about, roughly, approx. 45 minutes from Tupper Lake area. Saranac Lake area is 15 minutes to Lake Placid. Fish Creek ponds would work well for a base camp.

Thanks all for the resources. My wife and I are also headed up to ADK for the first time next summer too.

  Adirondacks

Hi Leo. I started paddling in the Adks when I was about 6 years old. I now have grandchildren that are that age and I am eager to introduce them to the Adirondacks as well. When we first started paddling we had a base camp in a campground and would do overnight or sometimes 2 nights away, and then would return to the campground. Eventually we built up to 2 week ventures. Long Pond in the St. Regis canoe area is also a great starting point, since you are never a far paddle from your vehicle. There is a nice island to camp on, and you could do day trips to some of the other ponds from there. Whatever you decide you won't be disappointed. The ADKS are a paddlers paradise.

Our scout troop put in at Floodwood pond (there's an out-fitter store nearby) and paddled out to the big island to make camp (and get away from the black flies). That's a great base from which to explore the Fish Creek ponds loop.

Be sure you get the 5th edition of the Paddlers Map. Many sites were closed or moved on Long and St Regis ponds. The island site on Long Pond was one of them.

Talk to outfitters in the area. Get guidebooks and maps. Perhaps hire a guide for your first trip. They will make the experience easier and more pleasant for all involved.

Also, take a look at the Black River in Lewis County under utilized resource and crowding will definitely not be a problem...

and St Regis Outfitters.

He is in the heart of canoe country. Now living in the town of Black River for some time in the late sixties, I appreciate the Black River but its not my first choice.

Dont worry too much about the ADK paddling experience. There is something for everyone.

  keep it fun

we camped on Follensby for three days, our kids loved it as they had an Island to explore and a couple kid sized boats to splash around in, the lack of pressure to keep moving, and plenty of side trips to explore the portage trails to other ponds kept it fun, along with camping with their cousins. We didn't get to go last year (new baby) but will be doing it again in june this year.
Each of my kids has their own mouseboat now, and their cousins have one also, as well as an inflatable, they should have a blast camping and paddling.
