Dang we made it all the way to mid August with nary a mention of our favorite fall festival of boats, merriment, boats, feasting, and more boats.

This year has me forgoing the Boundary Waters for the first time since 1999, so really looking forward to this years gathering. I'll save the details for Ness who has that nice page put together that summarizes when, where, how and why.

But for now who thinks they may be sojourning to Central PA for the Octoberfest!

  I'd like to be there
Posted by: clarion on Aug-16-11 10:00 AM (EST)
It's been a few years for me. Hopefully the kids aren't bombarded with homework that weekend. I want to play dead fish polo!

  probably not this year

It appears that Raystown is going to coincide with the fall Ozark Rendezvous which I am somewhat committed to attending.

Someone has to try to keep The Bob in line.

These grandkids take up a lot of time, but the christening is this coming weekend in Va. Weekend of Sept 23, I'll be at Umbagog with ScottB and DougD. Two weeks later...Raystown. Anyone want to paddle to the bridge and back?

Hope to see you there String!

  Near Miss
Posted by: dougd on Aug-23-11 9:20 PM (EST)
I'm bumming but I'm going to miss RT again. Seems like I'm never gonna make it down there again. Work seems to have this dim view of me taking off for Lake Umbagog and the RT back to back as a bad thing, bastards just don't get it! Damn, and I wanted to bring down the Colander 119, aka MR Courier, to have everyone pick it apart and tell me what I should have done on the rebuild.

Maybe next year. Will have to find some water and tip a beer to you all, you are all the best of the best and it sucks to miss seeing everyone! Make sure ya tip one back at me on the late night paddle that I know a bunch of you will have.

Gettin' closer.

Looking forward to another Girocks tour of the Little Juniata this year. Last few years his trips rocked (and WERE rocky). Hope he will do the same again this year.

Bring Royalex if you plan on paddling that trip.

  10th Annual
Posted by: wesd on Aug-27-11 10:55 AM (EST)
If I am not mistaken this is the 10th year of what started as a humble gathering of solo canoes.

I will be there for certain. This year has been a washout for paddling time due to travel and home projects. Cannot wait to see friends and paddle boats.

  Really Excited!!

Elaine and I have not been there the past 2 years but we are planning on getting there Thursday before noon. I just read this thread out loud to Elaine and we are both looking forward to seeing all of our good friends (Pyker, Clarion, Ness, WesD, Andy S, Nightswimmer and the BlueMerles). Personally, I am excited to finally meet and put faces to several of the folks (BaldPaddler, String, Suntan) that have replied saying that they are going to be attending.

Andy, I would be more than happy to paddle with you to the bridge and back. Sort of sounds like a James Brown lyric! Two identical Artisan Milleniums. Yours is the "prettier one" and mine is the "faster one". lol

  Potluck on Saturday

-- Last Updated: Sep-04-11 9:59 PM EST --

The potluck is on Saturday, at a campsite TBD (usually the corner one, or an empty one). Bring something to pass, and your own serving and eating paraphernalia. I think the start time was 6 pm last year. BTW, the potlucks get better every year.

I hope my hubby Hopsing comes, (can get time off work), as it won't be right to hang up the the "Eat at Hopsings" sign without him. So, we'll see.

I was also thinking, a nice draw for me is that some people there like to night paddle -- it's lots of fun. Pyker, I hope your brother is coming again. He's the best nighttime tandem bow partner EVAH.

I have received the official, original, typewritten Solo Polo aka Dead Fish Polo Rules that I put on a PDF scan. Dave Curtis sent them to me via a friend.

They exclude royalex boats -- hey wait a minute! Can we change that?

Someone else wanted to see them - I can't recall who? Email me.

PS -- LDC (Dave Curtis of Hemlock Canoes) said he could be persuaded to referee a game in his official referee shirt if we got a game together at Raystown this year. Last two contestants have to stand in their canoes!

about coming. My Mother was admitted to a nursing home last week. I couldn't afford enough of my time anymore to care for her at home. It appears she is in the final weeks or month of life, due to breast cancer. Can't say when but she could be gone at any time. Her 95 birthday is the 14th of September, and appears she may make that milestone. May be a very last minute decision to come. At best I may just come Saturday, paddle some and join the potluck. If for some reason I can't make it,ya'll{how's that for southern speak} have fun.

And man, do I ever need some decompression time. The spring and summer has been a blur of family responsibilities and commuting to Pgh (10K on a vehicle bought in May!) and one - yes, one morning in a boat. I plan on arriving Wednesday midday and will once again try to snag the inside corner site for the B.L. Film festival. Look for the multi-colored Cookes tarp.

And with Moby along as my, "Seeing ('Aye-yi-aye-yi-yi!')Ain't Believing Dog," I'm screwed and my needle's twisted off its shafted pivot.

Paddled chukkers of sushi, tumbling tumblewweds of Jackie Trehorn'd-together Karl Hungus and Bunny v. the Ned Beatty perversions in porcine posturing ("...at least its an ethos."), and now multitudes of folks taking up the needle trying to get a fix on lost horizons, or maybe that other inexplicable colony on Lost's island - Raystown, besides all the magnificent paddling craft and wonderfully diverse paddlers, is the Disneyland Walt might have envisioned if he'd been forcefully bussed cross districts along with Ken Kesey and that Leary fella!

Basically this event is held at Seven Points Campground operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, at Raystown Lake in central Pennsylvania: http://raystown.nab.usace.army.mil/Camping/seven_points_camp.htm

The Paddlers typically stay on the Senioa Loop at that campground: http://raystown.nab.usace.army.mil/Camping/senoia_camp.htm

You can share a campsite. I recall you can have two vehicles and two tents at each site. The "town" nearest to the campground is Hesston PA.

There is no rigid agenda. Show up when you want, leave when you want, paddle if and when you want.

Posted by: wesd on Sep-23-11 10:43 AM (EST)
The only construct left as of this past May is a short section in Blairsville.

If you exit 22 at the Summit exit (past Ebensburg) and follow "old" 22 thru Duncansville and Hollidaysburg on into Huntingdon it is a real pleasant drive.

I am thoroughly into "pleasant", so a pleasant drive will be welcome.

I plan on this RT to be a decompression session, scheduled to the max with
*sitting and thinking,
*sitting and not thinking,
*sitting and paddling,
*sitting and drifting
*sitting and eating,
*sitting and tending the fire,
*sitting and staring into the fire,
*sitting and BS'ing with friends,
*sleeping comfortably.

I will probably add additional tasks to my schedule as I think of them.

Been watching the various USGS gages in the Huntingdon area. LOTS of rainfall over the past two months and continuing this week. The outflow of the Dam should remain at a steady rate somewhat above the normal this time of year. Any river trips should benefit from nice levels.

"long range" weather is looking very pleasant though as we all know reliability percentage is low to moderate. See everyone next week.

Does anyone plan on running a trip on the river this year? I have limited boat rack space and I'm trying to decide weather or not it's worth it to bring a extra boat for running the Juniata.   River trip Friday
Posted by: bluemerle on Sep-30-11 12:48 PM (EST)
River trip will be Friday. I've talked with Jeff (girocks), and the plan is to do the Little Juniata. There should be plenty of water. Other local creeks for bigger whitewater are rain dependent, and from now until next Friday, the weather reports say no rain.

Last year we did the lower section of the Lil-J, so this year we'll probably do the upper section. The river is Class 1, maybe a 2 on it; nothing of any consequence. There are a few nice features to play on.

The plan is to set the shuttle and be ready to paddle by noon.

So it'd be acceptable if I brought a variety of toys to turn loose for general play and mucking about? I do have a few I could bring. ;)

Seriously thinking of playing hooky and attending.

  Solo?
Posted by: baldpaddler on Oct-02-11 11:45 AM (EST)
I am bringing up my wife, so I have to bring up my tandem. If any one has a spare solo I can use when
my wife is indispossed for paddling I would appreaciate it.

  River trip permits - No
Posted by: bluemerle on Oct-02-11 12:51 PM (EST)
We won't be using any "official" launch, so no permit necessary for the river trip.

Marshall, since I'll only have a paddle
Posted by: string on Oct-02-11 3:24 PM (EST)
and PFD, that would be good.

but it isn't in the cards. So many nice people. I am sure I'll be kicking myself when everybody chimes in next week with tales of the good times.

  String, #?
Posted by: Marshall on Oct-03-11 9:45 AM (EST)
String, here's your quandary;

So the question is 1, 2 or trailer # of kayaks. Sorry only one Esquif Echo would be going.

Looking like a Sunday/Monday thing for me. Will know a little later today as to definite status.

Not gonna climb mtn after all
Posted by: booztalkin on Oct-03-11 10:36 PM (EST)
I'd planned to camp out on top of NH's Mt. Osceola this weekend. Today, I confirmed my friend had to cancel our trip to NH. Oh, what to do?

I came home and told Mrs. Booz I wanted to dry run a recipe for the pot luck. She is only too glad to let me cook. Mushroom-Artichoke in Pesto over spaghetti noodles. Came out well, and I hope it will meet the standard of culinary mastery typical of the pot luck. So, I know what to cook.

What boat?

Sounds like an appetite is more

important than a boat.

Something you can take on the river

I am probably not gonna be there in time for it, so I am promoting it heavily - it was a great trip the last few years!

What's the format for buying boats?
Posted by: suntan on Jul-06-12 9:25 AM (EST)
I'm finally firmly rooted in attending this year and ready to upgrade. With all the boats that will be there, surely someone will be selling something. Is there a format in place?

  no format

There may well be private individuals there who have boats for sale and a thread may pop up on this forum regarding items for sale so keep an eye out.

Dave Curtis has generally always been there in recent years with a trailer of Hemlock boats to demo. Sometimes Harold Deal comes and typically brings his Hemlock Shaman and Hemlock SRT (if Dave has not brought those models). One year Bill Swift was there with a trailer of Swift canoes, but that was a while back.

It has been a policy not to advertise items for sale, however, or create a flea market atmosphere. If you see a boat you are interested in ask the owner. Sometimes folks will put items out at their campsites that they have up for sale, but without any "for sale" signs, so feel free to ask.
