Be realistic about your skills and equipment, and be cautious. Make sure you dress for immersion. Should you flip over or get separated from your boat, this is what will keep you alive. Also wear your PFD at all times. Bring the right gear for the conditions. If your boat was not made for waves or currents, stay out of them. And bring gear to contact authorities, something like a SPOT or VHF.
