So, we all hear about tough times for independent retail stores. Mine was no different. We'll be closed for good at the end of the month.
Exkursion was a family-run business started by my step-dad back in 1974. We were located in the Pittsburgh area. In addition to paddling, we sold hiking and climbing gear and clothing. Several p.netters I know of were customers of ours.
I want to thank the community here for providing input and advice to me that, in turn, has been passed along to many customers and kayaking students in western PA.
If you know of a little shop somewhere that carries great stuff and has good people, I recommend you go there, make a purchase, and make a friend. It'll come back to you in ways you may never expect.

I think there's a double whammy where Internet sales give a customer a larger choice and better price than any specialty shop can offer but also folks have less cash for recreational purchases.

Yep, we feel like we did a lot of things right and made the best decisions we could , but a kind of tide had turned and there was no swimming against it.

I buy, getting what I need depends on trying things out in the store. If I want it, I buy it there.
ugh, so sorry to hear that|

I'll certainly miss the great store and Fred and the crew. I've been a customer since he opened the first shop in Greensburg - my first climbing harness came from there and my most recent kayak and plenty of backpacking, climbing, paddling and skiing stuff in between. There is nothing like a small independent outfitter you can rely on for expert personal service and depth of stock. Very sorry to see you close but I'm pleased to see you will continue with the skills training in paddling and climbing and with some guide service. I had hoped to stop in last weekend before the last day but got a nasty cold at Christmas I didn't think I should share.
