I like how everyone is in drysuits and wearing pogies, meanwhile Nigel Dennis is in a t-shirt.
  That looked like a blast

Are they having another one of those in 2014? I wish I new about that one as I would have gone. Only about 9 hour drive for me.

The Autumn Gales event has been listed on the BCU North America site for a few months. (

BCU North America is being replaced by Paddlesports North America at some point over the next year - exactly when is uncertain but PNA has made it thru basic approvals for a new organization based in New York state. The web site is not up but is being worked on.

For better or worse, depending on your point of view, PNA looks like it will run the same as current BCU program.

The Gales is a was a heavily-BCU oriented event, so you may see it back again only the alphabet letters of many involved will be PNA rather than BCU.

This is the guy who runs it
It has been going on every fall for years now, I went 4 or 5 years ago and had a blast. According to the graphic at the end of the video it is scheduled next year on October 10, 11 and 12th. Just keep checking his website next year to sign up.

I emailed waveology and yes its next year in October. I missed that in the video. I will be going for sure looks like a lot of fun and since I have only kayaked in the Great Lakes, tides would be a new thing for me to learn about.

again in 2014.

And the second week of June a trip over to the Outer Hebrides. The paddling isn't as rugged as you might think and the scenery is spectacular...can't wait!

Hello folks.
Yes, the 2014 Autumn Gales is scheduled for October 10-12 running in Fishers Island Sound, our home waters of Kayak Waveology. We will again have a good showing of our BCU coaching friends form SKUK (NDK). We will be offering BCU 4 Star Sea, 5 Star Sea courses, and Required nav courses 3 days prior to the event.

Again, the event is timed with a morning Ebb and an Afternoon flood on springs, and the days will be getting shorter ,but not as short as running this event in November. But it has snowed in October before, with the water temps still at 65F.

You can keep in touch on our web site calendar on and our new event web site built last year directly for the Autumn Gales, thats

Looking for ward to another great paddling season.

Good cheers

Question re the awards for 2014

If Paddlesports NA is up and running by the next Gales, would the training and/or awards credit to Paddlesports NA or would BCU still be able to do that at a venue over here?

Asking because CT is conveniently close, and timing on the transition may also be close.

[Added - here is the current clip on the status of things from BCUNA -
Update: Paddlesports North America (PNA) received a Certificate of Incorporation in New York in late October. We have been organized as a Type B not-for-profit in NY, which will make obtaining federal 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status more likely. Currently our lawyer is reviewing draft bylaws that were authored by the initial Board of Directors. The transitional Board of Directors is currently working on the federal 501(c)(3) application, a business plan, and development of a website. Progress has been slow, but we are moving forward. We do not have an estimate as to when we will be operational at this point, but the Board is hard at work to make this happen as soon as possible. Stay tuned for further updates!]
