anybody following comet ISON ....

...... I've been interested and beginning to keep tabs on it . Going to try to zero on it with my 60 power transit ... should be able to see it if I can find it .
With some research and coordination I found Saturn a few years back . It was very small in my transit but definately Saturn with it's rings and all ... was way cool .
I think I've almost gathered enough info. for ISON now , and almost ready to locate it . Soon in very early Nov. it will be more and more glared out by the Sun and become unvisible from earth by means of ordinary opticals and amateur telescopes ... special lenses , filters will be needed .
ISON is expected to reach perihelion on Nov. 28th as it will be as close to the Sun as it will get . ISON is a Sun Grazer , and what will happen to it as it approaches and grazes the Sun is unknown because it's believed to be a new comer from way out , from the ort Cloud area .
Will it survive it's encounter with the Sun ?? If it does it will sling shot around the Sun and back by Earth again ... on it's way outbound , probably to never return again ... not expected to be a threat to Earth , but such trajectories are at best an astronomical window of plus or minus .
If it survives the Sun , from Dec. 1-18 should have it in view from Earth again ... rising higher daily in the S.E. from the horizon ... viewing it an hour before sunrise .
NASA established a campaign of selected astronomers to gather info. on ISON from all sources possible globally ... their public site is linked here .
University of Maryland amateur astronomers as well have an ISON campaign going on ... here
the internet is filled with all kinds of junk about ISON ... some simply speculative , others predicting the end of the world as we know it , and others so far off base they are just emabarrassingly incorrect (wrong even) . The sites linked are dependable resources for those interested in astronomical facts and correct science application .
Comets are pretty cool ... ISON is believed to have a nucleus (a rock) of about 3-5 miles wide , giving of a debris field (coma) of about 32,000 miles wide , and it's tail (trail) is in the millions of miles ... it may reach a magnitude of -5 or brighter even as it nears the Sun !! ... Venus for instance , at it's brightest is about a Mag.-5 .
The visible naked eye can detect aparent brightness magnitudes of +7 . Brightness magnitude works like this ... using 0 as the standard (star Vega) which is bright , moving in the less bright direction the numbers are positive as in 1, 2 , 3 etc. (3 is dimmer than 2 for instance) ... moving in the brighter direction from Vega 0 , we go negetive numbers -1, -2, -3 etc. (-3 is brighter than -2) .

..... through my 60x transit . It's very small to me , and right where it should be .

Well if I could ever get a clear sky here in the northeast, I might have a chance. Particularly here in lake effect country east of Lake Ontario, there is little hope at this time of year.
