On my first trip to the Allagash it was my wife and me in a canoe and her half-brother following us in a whitewater kayak (a small boat to be in for five days I thought).
He's an accomplished kayaker and a bit of a thrill seeker. Unknown to us at the time, after we portaged past the falls he decided to go back and run them.
He flipped about 3/4 through, lost his helmet and made it the rest of the way upside down, helmetless. We were waiting at the place we arranged to meet if we split up and he was taking a long time. So we paddled back upstream and found him sitting quietly in his kayak, quite shaken but OK. He vowed never to do something that stupid again. 18 years later he's still alive so I guess he kept that vow.
