North Jersey's Splitrock Reservoir is a popular paddling destination in a big part because it is unique in northern NJ. An unspoiled 3 1/2 mile long waterway with no shore structures other than the dam at the south end. It has a distinct wilderness feel even though it's only about 40 miles from Times Square as the crow flies.
The fact that the current launch is car top only and the carry to the water is about 200 feet keeps crowds to a reasonable size.
The state DEC has plans to build a boat ramp, road and additional parking and I doubt the ramp will be for rowboats only. I don't know if their plan is to allow electric motors only, or gas motors, but either way I'm sure the big bass boats will flock to the lake once this ramp is in operation.
I think this will significantly change the experience of paddling at Splitrock for the worse. I've written to my state senator, my assemblymen and the DEC to protest this. The state has plenty of lakes with boat ramps for the bass boats (and I say this as a bass fisherman who has a motorboat and uses these ramps), but experiences like Splitrock are scarce in NJ an should not be destroyed.
Please write your representatives and the DEC to express your opinion on this matter.
