..... a good friend of mine sent me a link to the 15'-6" model (square stern) of these canoes ... he ask "what do you think of this canoe" ??
I replied with one word ... junk .
I've been considering selling one or both of my canoes and had mentioned this to him . The one he and his family have borrowed a few times is my Old Town Acadia RX 16'-10" (1984 model) . I think the Acadia weighs about 72 lbs. , it the older Oltonar RX , thicker , heavier and stronger . This canoe is in real nice condition , not all scratched up ... I replaced the thwarts (Brazilian Cherry) and modified the front seat (much better) .
They are borrowing it again at the present also . He would like for me to sell it to him , and I mentioned if I did decide to sell it , I think $500. for it and a couple Carlisle beaveretail paddles (54" & 57") is about as low as I would go . That's more than fair isn't it ??
He says he'll buy it if I want to sell .
I could help him find a decent used canoe if I decide I want to hold on to my OT RX awhile longer .
He probably weighs near 150 lb. (5'-6" or so) , she is lighter and a couple inches less height . They have a son who's 7 , and a daughter who's 3 . A few years back I gave her my Turtle Works Otter tail paddle cause the shaft length fits her perfect and the narrower blade is what she needs to make paddling easier for her .
I think my OT 16'-10" RX Acadia canoe is perfectly suited for them , a nice fit .
He's already got a Yakima Q-tower on front his truck , and a Reese vertical T canoe loader on his hitch , Yakima cam Buckle straps and good ropes ... all these things aquired by my advice a few years ago so he could haul mu canoe when he wanted to use it , and maybe get his own one day .
They would need to find some PFD's that are better than what they've borrowed and used so far ... but I guess once you have your own canoe , personally fitted PFD's for best comfort will seem more like a reasonal investment .
Sell , or not sell ??
Keep discouraging them away from JUNK canoes ??

would appreciate the stability of a 97 pound, 42 inch wide canoe, with an ice cooler in the center seat?

Yes, continue to discourage your friend from buying a bad canoe. $500 is a very reasonable price for boat and paddles. Anything he buys in that price range is not likely to be as good, and he is not going to be happy because he is used to your good gear.
I can only answer one part.|
