South Fork of the Edisto River
The Bamberg County SC Chamber of Commerce is interested in working with individuals and groups interested in promoting the recreational uses of the portion of the Edisto River that forms our border with Orangeburg County. The Chamber believes the South Fork of the Edisto River can be a popular destination for paddlers. Before we can get the word out about this amazing river we need to clear the river of limbs and trees that are blocking paddlers ability to navigate our stretch of the Edisto. Ultimately we need to clear the 35 miles of river from Claude’s Landing all the way to Zig Zag Landing. The first phase is to clear the 7 mile section between Bobcat Landing on U.S. 301 and Brabham Landing on Cannon Bridge Road. A planning meeting is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Bobcat Landing. This meeting is for anyone interested in using, promoting and enhancing our stretch of the Edisto River.
To introduce the area canoe and kayak enthusiast to our stretch of the Edisto we are planning a couple of events on the river after the clearing of this first section is completed. On Saturday, October 26, 2013 we plan to have the first Canoe & Kayak race from Bobcat Landing to Brabham Landing. To see what this will look like go the Chamber’s Facebook Page and check out the video of the Tom River Canoe Race in New Jersey. This race has been going on for over forty years. This and other events will not happen unless we can get enough volunteers to do what is necessary to clear the Edisto River of the trees that are making it difficult to use the river at this time.
