Just got back to southern New England after another west coast swing. This was the third one since my son Aaron took off, leaving behind a free college education in pursuit of a quicker albeit more painful lesson in growing up and becoming a man. My wife Janice and I headed to San Diego, meeting up with my sister and brother in law to see my son graduate from USMC boot camp. I hadn't seen Aaron since New Years, and though he only dropped 10 pounds since then, he looked nearly anorexic...well, 198 pounds of anorexia lol. His first benefit was getting us all aboard the Carrier Midway for a free tour. A few days later we headed up to Washington state to "relax" at my sister and brother in laws place, but a few days into that I got to take a road trip to finally meet "Steve in Idaho" and get a day in poling the Deschutes river in Bend, OR. Many thanks to Steve for his 11 plus hour round trip hauling 2 canoes and 4 poles so I could finally get some poling in with a different landscape than what I'm used too. We Had a blast and are looking forward to another get together sometime in the future, possibly in my neck of the woods. Aaron and I got a 14 mile hike in on Mt. St. Helens as well, and this topography really blew my mind. Rock vomit everywhere, ravines obliterating the trail, it felt really mystical and exciting. As we had our trail end unexpectedly, our loop turned into an "out and back" so we went out like tourists, came back like marines ;-). I swam with some salmon in the Lewis River, they liked my legs...???, and that was the coldest water I've intentionally been in in quite some time...anyways, pix here. Didn't get any of us hiking the "Ape caves"....as it was pitch freaking BLACK HAHAHAHA (as Linda Baron has been known to say)..
top left...with all the Forrest Gumps running lol.

Matt, Gotta love those poling pics, looks like a hard push. SIIdaho is someone I've always wanted to meet! Had to look up the Star of India, know I read about it somewhere but couldn't recall. The pics of Mt St Helen's are fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like a wonderful trip, Matt|

but the last time I went poling was November 2012 with Matt, TommyC1 and Riverstrider on the Riverton section of the Farmington. My poling boat must be getting lonely.
A poling private Idaho, huh?|

When I asked how many people he poles with he said "including you, two." His son Scott is getting into it...as much as I'd love to join in more often, that 5000 mile round trip is gonna' have to wait awhile. Open invite to head east, maybe we could get one of our world famous cruises together; and Steve did mention his wifes desire to visit New England, which is pronounced precisely as it's spelled, with nasal intonation the only variable.
How it was explained to me|
