I own a rec boat, it's a Pelican, there it's out there I got it on sale at Dunhams, is it fancy? No. Do I love it? Yes.
I wouldn't say a rec boat is for people who aren't serious about kayaking, it's for people who are starting out, and for people who don't have a lot of extra money to spend on a touring boat (like me) but still want to enjoy being out on the water. I have wanted a kayak for as long as I can remember but I also don't want to go broke buying one.
Rec boats are shorter and wider than touring boats so they are more stable for the beginner, they don't track as well as a longer thinner boat, and are slower. However I took mine to a safety class/paddle technique class, and I did just fine. I will admit it did take on a lot of water when we did capsize drills but I bought some airbags for it so I think that will help a lot.
I will admit I am a little sensitive to people looking down on rec boats like mine, my belief is as long as we are safe and having fun we should welcome everyone on the water instead of look down on them because of their boat or board.
