  Congrats to Greg Stamer...

a P-net poster for winning the "Water Tribe" 300 mile Everglades Challenge (class 2,single male racing) with an awesome time of 3 days, 19 hours and 10 minutes in some rough, cold conditions.
Greg was in his Epic 18X, and it had to be a feat just to keep it upright in some of the long open crossings with five foot breaking whitecaps.

Way to go Greg!

Nice show. I know for you, and you demostrate again, it's not all about SOFs and rolling. :)

Are the checkpoints on the inside of that protected waterway that Greg's route goes through, for the most part? Probably considered safer than paddling in the open ocean along the coast line...

One unrelated question - what does the $300+ registration fee cover, if this is an unsupported event and you are on your own???

Btw., if I recall from other posts over at Qajaqusa.org, Greg was planning to use his small ONNO wing with a "racing" GP as a backup. Would be interesting to see his race report and read-up on this and the rest of his race experience...

The first is on the ICW. the second is at the beginning of the wilderness water way and the third is at Flamingo.
You can take any route you want. Some go out side, and others use inside routes depending on the winds.
Sometimes it is better to be outside to avoid paddling against strong tides on the inside
Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay and Charlotte harbor are as much open as the Gulf is and as any of the competitors will tell you, just as rough, especially the ones who capsized in the five foot white caps in Sarasota Bay
It is unsupported, and if you have any help at all except from another competitor, you will be disqualified.
Many are still out there, and the deadline to finish is Sunday at 10:00AM
My heros are the ones in the solo kayaks with no sails like Greg

  Great Experience

Jack,

Many thanks for the kind words! I'm finally back home in front of a computer after some very nice R&R in Key Largo.

It was an awesome race. My longest sitting in the kayak was 28 hours, from a surf launching in Naples to Flamingo, to cover about 108 miles.

While grueling, the long leg mentioned above had some of the most beautiful scenery that I have seen in years. I was crossing the Everglades section of the Gulf at night under spectacular night sky, with the milky way arcing overhead, and the Southern Cross visible on the horizon. Later the moon rose over the swamps, followed by the sun. Priceless.

Jack, it was great to finally meet you and Nancy. Please give me a shout when you are in my area and I would love to get together.

Greg

Shane Perrin finished it on a SUP, after getting all his stuff stolen during the race.

I still don't know how he does it ?

for the paddlers who never heard his story:

He had a kidney transplant, and decided to use this 300 mile event for a fund raiser for kids on dialysis.
No one has ever completed this event or even started it on a SUP, and I never thought he would complete it.
There is a six mile open water crossing across Tampa Bay, a eight or nine mile crossing of Sarasota Bay, and then another eight mile open water crossing of the mouth of Charlotte Harbor.
During the second half of the last two there were four and five foot breaking white caps and some capsizes(even the small sail boats). The night temperatures were in the forties and along with it one night was a cold rain. Ater the thirty mile stretch off Fort Myers and Naples beaches, he did the 10,000 Islands, and then the Everglades ninty nine mile wilderness waterway, including "Nightmare", follwed by crossing Florida Bay to Key Largo.
Along the way he pulled up on a beach for a snooze, and some SOB stole his gear, including his electrlonics, (Spot, GPS, and PLB). It got reported on the WaterTribe Forum, and the money started pouring in. I don't know if I have the whole story correct, but the way we heard it was he hitchiked to a West Marine, replaced his electronics and necessary gear, got back and started out again.
He finished the almost 300 miles in 6 days 14 hours.
The next day, yesterday, he took off from the finish line and headed to Key West.
And to his credit he is a humble guy.

PS: we are all hoping that the crook energizes the PLB or sends a SOS on the SPOT!

Sorry we didn't get to paddle with you this time around, but we did use your itineraries for the FL springs area and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had a big party for Patty's big 60th. Hope yours was enjoyable too!
