Some good and bad examples of Olympic venues being re-used or repurposed or master-planned for the future. From the perspective of plannind and architecture:

How did they come up with Sochi?|

It's a subtropical beach resort.

Couldn't they have put it in the Urals?|

Seems like the Black Sea isn't cold enough.

There is plenty of snow there too. The indoor events don't really matter. The warm weather is not helping.
that is a good question|

For one, it'll be the most expensive olympic development in history, in part to account for the weather.

Plenty of snow and cold weather near sochi. The countries choose to spend billions.
I'm not sure what you're arguing|

It's not a good choice for the winter olympics. The skiers have to get in an airplane to go to the venue. There are better choices in russa.

Yes bribes are exhausting. The IOC and FIFA, they both hate America and are completely corrupt.
I like rwven's idea|

Sweden in the winter and greece in the summer.
Why Sweden? Norway already|

has the facilities, the appropriate landscape, the snow, permanent ski jumps all over the country, including the Holmenkollen, and rinks.

Bankrupt their country with their Olympics. The g8 are just better suited.
we take that out of their hands|

First of all, the venues are built in greece now. Secondly, logistically it's just as good a location as any of the G8. Thirdly, no one says greece has to run the olympics poorly. They bet wrong and they were the first post-9/11 olympics, so their security budget was huge.

the first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix. Which is why I think it could be a problem determing a permanent venue. Is history the primary factor, and if so, which aspect of history? If topography and snow conditions are the deciding factor, there are several wonderful choices - Norway with Oslo and the areas nearby, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck, several places in Switzerland, the Italian Alps, Lake Placid and more.
that's the challenge|

The summer olympics would face the same challenge.
I would say...|

Switzerland, but the citizens of Switzerland voted against a bid in 2022. I guess that says something about the value of hosting the Olympics.

Sarajevo is in the discussion if it is about learning lessons. 5 years of civil war changes everything.
