Remember,you will need a place to store the composite canoes out of the sun lite. Aluminum doesnt mind being stored outside. I can carry my 18 foot grumman quiet far but if I get that wierd feeling in my shoulder I can barely get it up on my shoulders. I did a few portages with a kevlar Scott canoe this past summer, and even with the pain in the shoulder I could do it by myself no problem. My suggestion is stay in your buget at home and rent a canoe you dream about owning for the trip. Keep the open side up! JOHN
