clear top coat for storm paddle

Some time ago I made a greenland storm paddle. Since it was a first attempt at paddle making I decided to "cheap out". I made it from a doug fir 2" x 4". It actually turned out "not that bad" & I like it, it goes on my front deck as my back-up for tour, surf & RGg. After a while it started to dry out and form some cracks in the grain, so I gave it a light fiberglass wrap for some extra strength & to seal it. It again turned out "not that bad". A few bubles and whatnot, but I'll give it a quick light sanding before a clear top coat.

Q. Without goin crazy, what's the easiest clear top coat to apply & maintain?

Thanks, t.george
