"It can be said that a kayaking group is a collection of solo paddlers." I've never heard a better description. Nothing focuses the attention like being out there on your own. As this excellent article points out, if and when you venture out solo, preparation is crucial, and self-reliance essential. The rewards of solo paddling are many, and one that stands out in my mind is that if you're comfortable paddling solo, you know you'll be in good hands when paddling with a group.
