Wayne, as a body-boarder/surfer/surf kayaker, I would also suggest that paddlers heading out into the surf understand surf etiquette as well. This will greatly help surfer-kayaker relations. When surfing, there is nothing worse than a wave hog and in kayaks, we can easily catch almost any wave we want. Some things to add:
1. Never cut off another wave rider, the rider closest to the breaking portion of the wave has the wave. Do not be a "Shoulder Hopper"
2. Do not paddle out through area others are actively surfing the waves, paddle out through the calmer sections of the surf.
3. Yield some of the good waves to others
4. Interact with other wave riders, it is better for the water community as a whole.
