  double blade paddle solo canoeing
Posted by: old_user on Oct-29-10 9:26 AM (EST)

I was very interested in Tom Watson article on double blade paddling. I have been solo canoeing for about twenty years using a double blade paddle, doing annual about six week camping paddles (ocean mainly) on maine coast, everglades, north west , nova scotia. I paddle generally a sixteen foot old town camper style canoe, sit in bow seat go stern first. I use a built in back rest and stirrups, the designs of which I continue to fiddle with. I never adjusted to the confines of a kayak. Double blade canoeing allows me to bring my two buckets of books, my excess of clothes, with roominess for all the excess paraphanalia. ....bob raymond

Thanks for the comments. I've been paddling with both canoe single blade and kayak double. Since getting the solo canoe, however,I ind the kayak paddle works better with the narrower solo canoe. I love it.I still use a single blade on faster rivers, but for idle cruising or long crossings, the double blades suit me fine. Be safe.
