Rescuing Panicked Triathlete Swimmers

This is a great article about rescuing panicking paddlers, but what about tactics for rescuing panicking swimmers. I'll be supporting the swim portion of an iron-distance triathlon next weekend (2.4 mile swim). Any tips on assisting a distressed athlete while minimizing risk to myself?
