Except with young bears a male bear usually has a broader head, and wider chest. I lived in Alaska for 10 years, and found that in the bush, bears (black & Brown) were least likely to stand their ground with humans. Around settlements, and rivers that are heavily fished by people they are less fearful of man, and even relate people to food. No food in tent, I usually hung my food in a tree 15 to 20 feet in the air. most of the bears in the bush will run from you even if they are fishing, but not always. had a friend that had a bear take his fish away deep in the bush.
