I grew up in a mango grove here in Miami and presently grow nine cultivars (one of which, the Guthrie, is unique to our property, and a second of which, the Hargreave, is new and still exists only on a few properties, though Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden now is promoting it). Among our hundreds of tropical and subtropical fruit trees, we have some twenty mangos.

I'd like to add to Ms. Desjardins' article that the Tommy Atkins, while most "popular" as measured by its presence in stores in the US, is common mainly because of its shelf life and red color, not its flavor. Virtually one in South Florida (where we have hundreds of mango cultivars) chooses it as a dooryard tree. I urge consumers not to judge mangos by the Tommy Atkins!
