worrisome to see how often they lost

Kevin,

I found it worrisome that all subgroups you identifed ("keeners", not attentive ones, young and older) got lost, after instruction and with all the available tools. Something is really wrong there. Did it really happen that way or was it dramatized a bit for product placement?

Good observation.

A bit of both. First, they were not exactly lost - just confused of their whereabouts and what they were doing at the time (it was there first "real" experience using map, compass and GPS). I did dramatize the lost part to emphasize the group dynamatics part of the story line though. And, I didn't want to mention it in the story but they were "troubled" youth with me, which may have made a slight difference.
