Seal launch (Whitewater) Posted by: old_user on Nov-29-07 3:04 PM (EST)
One day I was about to put on the Nantahala River in North Carolina. It was a very busy day as the rafters were lined up, literally standing in line for a place to put in. I found a 6 ft almost vertical bank just upstream of the crowd. I had never attempted a seal launch before, but figured it couldn't be that difficult. With everything in it's place I leaned forward and instantly found myself and most of my short kayak underwater. The front end then pointed skyward(I imagined to appear like a sub making an emergency surface). I was doing an 'ender' for a couple of seconds, that's OK Ithought. Then the current worked on my submerged stern; my boat flipped upside, down head over heels if you can imagine that. I spent a few seconds processing the events which led up to this and then I rolled up. When I looked around the whole area was unusually quiet, everyone was in awe after hearing the splash and witnessing my first attempt at a seal launch. I just shrugged my shoulders and quickly paddled away, trying to leave the embarrassment behind me.
