Check The Water Temperature

One thing I'd add to the checklist:
A lot of paddlers have lost their lives because they were seduced by a gorgeous spring day into paddling on cold water without the protection of a wetsuit or drysuit. If you're not willing to dress for the water temperature, stay home until the water warms up.
