A Gazillion Black Flies
Posted by: old_user on Mar-28-07 10:04 AM (EST)
Just something to think about concerning allergic reactions. I kayaked Long Lake in the Adirondacks in May 05. I have not seen an infestation of black flies this dense since I was a kid (I dubbed it Jurassic Insect Park). Due to the unfortunate combination of having low concentration DEET and a pump spray bottle that wasn't able give adequate coverage to my lower legs, I suffered a minimum of 200 bites (I had so many bites at the sock line I was bleeding). Although I did not have a classic allergic reaction, on day two, my legs were throbbing in unison. I suspect that had I been out without bug spray, the shear number of bites would have caused dire consequences.
